Avon SR4 with 25 HP - Would it work

I am currently thinking about buying an SR 4M, but i only have a 25 hp outboard left over from my old boat.
Would it work, or do i have to get a new outboard?

If it would work, what speeds would be possible?

Yes it will work - best with a 2 stroke and leaning forward to plane - we run that setup for decades in our local yacht club - 25 knots

It's a 25 HP Mercury 2-Stroke weighting 52 kilos. I don't really care how fast it will plane because i'm not going to race it.

I'm usually helping out at alot of Rowing/Sailing Clubs and now my old boat is gone i'm gonna fulfil myself the long-nurtured wish of getting an AVON

By that token, a 6hp would also 'work', tootling along at 6knts. :-)

I used to do that on my 4.10 Wiking SIB but with a 2 hp
It works but as soon as you get passed by a bigger ship it stops working due to the wake

What about a 40hp on 4.7? Underpowered by a lot or just a little?

If possible, always go for max design hp. You don't have to use all of it all of the time, but you'll be glad that it's there when you need it. :-)

Depends.

Where the SR im going to get will mostly be used on flat/relatively flat water
Mostly canals/rivers, so i don't need the extra horsepower, but i can still upgrade the boat later...

Would a searider be 1st choice as a river boat?

It won't stay a river boat forever.

In say 2 years time i finished school and will propably move to england again and i don't wanna start buying a new boat... Now i have time to put into that boat that i might not have later... plus it's a dream of mine(the first boat i ever had my hands on the steering wheel was a 4m SR in 2001 i was 6 at that time)

If you have a 25hp 2-stroke Merc knocking about, then it would be worth seeking out an Avon 3.40 or 3.45 rib. These are great fun with 25hp.

I've been driving a 4.10 boat and i don't really want to downsize as i am also going on camping trips with me and another person on board.

I was just posting this thread to find out if it the boat would be ok with 25 hp... it doesn't have to go very fast just fast enough, and 25 knots is fast enough for me.

For fun i use my 3.10 SIB with 20 HP outboard.

2 persons & a load of camping gear may be asking a bit much out of a Merc 25 on an SR4.
