Anyway, I've got an Icom VHF only by chance. It's an M59 Euro which isn't upgradeabe. I'm planning to get it replaced with a Raymarine Ray 53 which is a dodgy US import, but it's a fully waterproof DSC set in a small footprint case. I haven't got round to it as the Icom is in a DS Developments Neptune waterproof case, and these cost more than the radios!

My last rib was a 6.2 Avon with a Yamaha 100hp 4/stroke, it was Rigged for family cruising with a double console with seat and four pods all from Outhill,The front console had a fuel tank,
the boat was well balanced in all weather condition and I deep V and a very high bow great for a following sea's. have fun.

Don't do it, get an Icom 601, you know it makes sense.

Richard, this dodgy import, it can pick up UK VHF channels then ? or is it just USA channels. Spent half an hour mid channel shouting into a mic for AP on one trip, when the owner said its an import VHF and u have to press a button each time you want UK channels.

Don't do it, get an Icom you know it makes sence!

Do you think icom will be bringing out a more budget DSC the 601 is a lot of money.

I got two Icom 502 just over 18 months old and they have both failed. one won't stop scanning which looks a lot like water ingress and the other just doesn't TX anymore.

I'll let you know what the after sales service is like but I understand it's quite good, we'll see

Hey Rogue Wave ( do you have a real name?)
Were the 502's mounted vertically or on the angle?
When they first brought out the 501 a few failed because they were mounted at an angle so water was able to catch on the radio. This in itself is ok but the atmospheric pressure changes sucked some of this water through - or so the story goes.
I understood that this was changed very quickly and I never heard of any of the ones I had deployed world wide failing due to this, percussif impact yes.
I've always had great service from Icom.

I couldn't take the pressure of being a senior member so I decided to Start again

I us Mounted on top of the console on the mounting bracket (Camel) and the other is surface mounted on the console which again has a slight rake. (Scorpion).this is the one that scans

I am informed that along with the Garmin 126 GPS I will be having the Garmin 120 sonar and the VHF/DSC will be a Silva, but model unknown.
What do you all think of Silva?

will the garmin only show text on the screen?
Do you have to read a bearign off it and steer by a magnetic compass or is it more advanced than that?

I didn't have a magnetic compass on the last rib and managed to use the graphics on the Garmin. You have a couple of options on the screen including compass bearing and directional arrow.
Also can store loads of waypoints and routes and I found it a greta tool to have onboard.
I have ordered a magnetic for the new rib just incase electrics go down.

Are you off to the LBS? If so have a lookk on the stands as there will no doubt be demo's and you'll have plenty of time to specify what you want before the unit needs fitting on your console.
Or Jason may have one to show you already installed on a rib this weekend.

I think i might end up with a 126 too.
They certainly sound good. I was originally lookign at plotters like the garmin 176 but the blue chart chips are £300 each...and they are very expensive unless bought in America. And if u buy from america it has the american basemap.

Ill listen to what Jason has to say on saturday. Did he sugest the 126 to you or did you already know thats what you wanted?

I spec'd the 126 as I'd had the 128 and the twig broke so as I'd been delighted with the unit I stayed with Garmin. The 126 is a neat little package and isn't ott on cost.

Simmo, you can download a copy of the Garmin 126 manual here: http://www.garmin.com/manuals/82_OwnersManual.pdf so you can read up on all the features and get a description of the way it works. Page 6 gives you a pretty good overview of the stuff it does.

I wish I could get an instruction manual for my MLR FX312 as easily.

Thought I'd post this Mail, Icom sent me in response to an enquiry I sent them

"unfortunately the IC-M402 does not meet UK or European approval standards so it is not available anywhere other the in the USA. It has the wrong class of DSC (class E instead of the required class D) and also does not contain all of the standard UK operating channels. The reason for this is that 95% of leisure craft in the Us do not leave their territorial waters and as such do not need to meet the international specifications."

The IC-M601 is the only VHF/DSC combined radio that we have available in the UK.

We all know that American channels differ from that in Europe, but it seems to indicate that the DSC function is different as well!

It's about time we were offered the same standard of equipment that our American "friends" enjoy at a similar price!!!

Next time I'm off to the States I'm going to get a HUMMINBIRD NS25 GPS Chartplotter, Fishfinder Depth sounder from Wal-Mart’s and try to join the revolution.

Steve, in my opinion the Navman your gettign is betther than any of the Garmin units we have discussed on this thread. I would much rather have a colour plotter than a simple GPS but really cant afford one at the moment.
