Attempted Theft!!!!

Evening all

Can you believe this my boat is still in pieces and some git has just tried to steal the whole rig out of my field!!! He had a nerve he parked in my carpark(The pub that is) which isnt exactly a quiet place walked into my field broke the wheelock and hitch lock off by which time i had seen him entering the field and grabed my torch and ran down there after him. He was driving round in circles then he eventually stopped and i politely (well not quite so politely) asked what he was upto!! He was lost!! Hang on you broke a lock of my gate broke my wheelock and hitchlock of my rib and you were just driving round the field lost!!! YEAH RIGHT!! Then the prick tried to run me over!! Police just missed him!! Anyone else had this problem lately???

Yep police came out and just missed him!! Plate came up as that vehicle but only has the last owners address so they think it was a traveler!! Have taken of two of the wheels on the starboard side and put three chains round the gate!! oh and my van, my bmw and my navara all blocking the field!! Good luck if they want to try tonight!! Will try and move it somewhere tommorow!! Just cant believe he was going to drive out with a huge orange tub behind him thinking nobody would notice!! would have been a squeeze getting it through all the cars parked in the carpark anyway!! it takes three turns to get it out onto the lane!!

Would it be prying to ask what his number plate is? It'd be worth a few places having it pinned to noticeboards...

I would love to however the police have asked if i can hold it back for a few days as they have their suspect a couple of people!!! im still watching the cctv footage its incredible!! as bold as brass!!

You guys seem to have some serious crime problems over there, not that we don't in the states, it is just that boat theft here is a relatively rare experience, as a matter of fact, in all my years of boating in the Great Lakes I cannot recall one boat theft. Sure, electronic equipment, outboard motors, props, things like that, but not entire boats.
Are they easily fenced or moved out of the country?
Will someone please elaborate for the Stateside audience?

CCTV footage of him trying to run you over?! Hopefully he'll get an attempted murder charge. At least then the police will actually look for him.

If he's a Gyppo I doubt the police will do anything - they would rather pick on easy targets like us!!! We have a big problem with them in Swansea - I saw a car being chased by about 6 police cars - it went into a local gyppo camp and the police refused to go in there as they didn't want to provoke an incident!!!

Hey Cod!!! Did you take notice of my earlier post? How is it and why is it that boat theft seems to be a popular activity over there?
What can be done with the current laws/situation to change the trend?

I don't think it's really that common over here - as you say it's mainly the smaller stuff that get's sold at boat jumbles etc. When they steal a whole boat they usually break it up for the engine and other bits.

A local power boat dealer in Swansea always leaves their boats on trailers - they are just "asking" to be nicked but only 1 ever was - and they only got about 10 miles before they were caught - towing a 30' long boat is a bit obvious and the getaway tends to be a bit slower than usual.

There was a very high profile RIB stolen a few years ago that the press had a field day with - it was a Pasco SR9 with 2x 300x outboards capable of about 90mph - of course it was OBVIOUSLY taken by terrorists or drug runners......

A couple of years ago they took one of the big Fairline's from the factory near to where I work, it just happened to be one of the ones that had been pdi'd and tank tested. They used Farlines crane to lift it onto a low loader

Sorry to hear about it, just goes to show the lengths people go to try and get something.
As Nos said, its prob best to move it unless you can blockade the gates like the farmers do with their fields. After all, motors have wheels, they could move them if they wanted to.

Sounds like it didn't take him long to bust the wheel and hitch locks off then if both were gone by the time you got there?

he was there for aprox 14 minutes in total i only noticed something strange when the gates were opened, nobody ever needs to go down there!!!

Pathalla, I think it's because most US states seem to have a pretty rigid registration system, where a boat gets a registration number much like a car and the hull identification number, trailer license number (something else we don't have) and engine number are all kept on record by the state. Therefore thieves are much less likely to get away with selling on stolen goods.

Plus they are allowed to shoot anyone they catch stealing their property, whereas if we do that in the UK we go to prison and the thief gets to sue us.

I must admit i was tempted to send the dogs down there!! But then their more likely to get put down if they cause injury!!!
