At last our 5.4m Searider is here :)

Hi All

As most of you know by now I've finally got myself a RIB - we were due to collect today but the seller needed to rush up to Nottingham at very short notice - so we collected last night.

Have just been sat in it on the drive (how very sad ) and she's fantastic!!!!

The seller bought her from BHG Marine just under three years ago - Feb 07 - and has since kept a service book for the engine - so she's had three services since coming into his care. She was born(??) in 1995 and has a Yamaha 75hp Pro on the back - not heard of the PRO are these okay??

She is in fantastic condition - or seems to be to us - have found a couple of grazes on the hyperlon that might need a very small patch and one very small section of straking that needs a bit of glue - other than that nothing else.

Trying hard to persuade hubby that a quick trip out this afternoon to check she does'nt sink is needed

He has clearly looked after the RIB and was very much a belt and braces man so everything has been carefully looked after.

Will post some pictures once the camera has recharged!!!

Jxx - a very excited RIB owner

Hi Jean, What area are you from? I used to live down that way (South Bersted, Bognor).

Trying to get a group of ribbers together for a bit of fun along this end of the coast. No dates or venue set yet- but as all the gatherings seem to be west side of the country..
thought I might try getting something going in the South East.

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike

That sounds a good plan - we are near Horsham, West Sussex

Let me know if you sort something - or if I can help with the organising

This is probably a bit late, but here goes anyway:

Itchenor is a good place to launch from for a first try. There is a lot of space which means you can park your rig off to one side and take your time sorting yourselves out and making sure you are 100% ready before you launch / recover.

The only drawbacks is it can be a wee bit crowded at high springs, and at low tide there is very little gradient, so you may want a rope between trailer and car.

You also have the whole of Chichester Harbour to explore, which gives you plenty of space to practice boat handling and check that everything is working before heading out to sea.

You do need to watch out for Chichester Bar outside the harbour though:

You lot really are barking mad

Thanks for the info re Itchener Chris - really useful and we lauched there today.

We had a really cracking first trip out - launched with no probelm at all - we timed it for low tide so not so shallow. Checked everything was working and set off towards Chichester Bar.

Cheated slightly and followed a larger boat out but meant we could concentrate on our new toy and less on the markers

Found ourselves out of the Harbour and into more interesting water

Perhaps not the calmest of seas - I would say a fairly large swell (for a newbie!!) with wave height about 1m plus (looked about 15m!!)- got totally soaked - surfed back in - now that is an interesting feeling - will have to ask for further advice on how to best handle a boat in surfing waves.

Then back out again just building confidence in the RIB and us - stopped for about 20 minutes and caught no fish!!!

Then played for a bit longer - waves seemd to be increasing as did the wind. At one point Darren (hubby) went airborn, landed on a full can of coke which he promtly flattened, then went through the anchor box lid!!. - So we have a slight repair to do now!!

Once finally soaked and rather cold we headed back in, letting the monster son take a turn - only to end up "ploughing" our way through some rather unexpected shallows!!!(as we were not looking at the markers lesson learnt!!) - no harm done as we were only pottering a 4kn - thank God, RIB seemed to take it all in her stride and almost seemed to have an air of looking after us rather than the other way around.

So at the end of a very exciting first day - we have a truly fantastic RIB and at no point did I feel we were asking her to do anything that felt unsafe - and we clearly have lots of growing and learning to do.

Once again thank you all for the advice, help and guidance it's very much appreciated

Jxx
