another rescue

once again proof that you can't put brains on a false face............

Man Rescued Trying To Sail To US In £300 Dinghy

not withstanding this dudes a twat, does the coastguard have power to take someone off their own boat without their will? part of them must have been thinking, if he wants to go then let him go.

cheers

I suppose that if he was to become a danger to other marine traffic then yes.

Maybe his Southampton street map was for here...

I cant help asking myself, why bother saving him.

How far do you go to save someone who does not want saving ?

What if he had jumped off a bridge?
What if he had hypothermia (or some other medical condition) and wasn't thinking rationally?
What if he had some "learning difficulties" and so wasn't really able to understand the risk himself?

Could you come to the conclusion that any "sane" person would be trying to do what he was?

If that didn't convince you then the knowledge that in a hour or twos time when he (or someone else, on his behalf) might ask for help it would be riskier for you or whoever was coming to his aid.

I'd guess the guys who serve on Lifeboats are pretty much wired up to try to save any person who might need it. I had assumed this was something hard wired into us all as part of "the human condition" - but I'm starting to realise I'm wrong.

This is not the first case of them "forcibly" rescuing someone and it must create a whole heap of ethical and legal issues. They have no special powers, and even the Coastguard have to jump through hoops to force a master to do something.

If you watch the video they didn't exactly grapple him to the ground...

But I agree with poly (need a better set of emoticons - one that says... Oh god someone take me away and shoot me..) As much as you might think he's daft enough to try let him... How would you justify that...

The RNLI guy said in 20 years he only felt he'd saved 5 people the rest he just helped... This was one of those 5. Noone knew he was out. No means to get help. Lack of skills to sail back when he decides time is up...

I presume had I been in the same location, in dry suit, no spewing my load, VHF, flares, PLB, yellow spot tracker with people ashore following me. Numerous test sails in advance... They would have been more likely to leave me...

Doesn't look like they dragged him to me, it appears like they helped him. Someone really sea sick is pretty incapacitated, and would need help balancing. He sure didn't struggle at all.

He was going for a Darwin Award! Without intervention he would have succeeded.

He obviously wasn't sound of mind, and hopefully will get the care he needs. Well done to the rescue services and yachtsman who made the initial call, many would have just sailed on by.

Or maybe he was of perfectly sound mind & had just had enough & decided to call it a day & sail over the horizon into the sunset. There are worse ways to go. On one hand, we have people with terminal illness campaigning for the right to die & on the other we are "saving" people who maybe perfectly able to make the choice, but we decide it's not in their best interest. Who's to say this guy didn't have a terminal illness & was getting out whilst he could, & he has now been denied that opportunity.

another rescue

PD - So on that basis you wouldn't try to talk someone down from Jumping off a bridge/shooting themselves etc Hmmm

I'm sure if he had family they were grateful. All well and good bailing from life, but it's a permanent solution to a usually temporary problem. Either way, even if not permanent/terminal, it ruins the lives of those around you, particularly if you just "disappear" with no closure.

To be fair this weekend's attempt was in a more sea worthy condition than the muppet going to Ireland.

Had he picked the right weather window, had the right gear, GPS, Maps, Compass, VHF etc. An attempt to get to IRELAND rather than the US in this weekend's boat might just have been reasonable... considering the things Frank Dye did with a boat 4 foot longer... (and I don't think Frank carried that much safety gear!)

I think even Frank would have thought that the US was ambitious in a Wayfarer though!

I agree 100%, but this guy probably thought that's just what he was doing until someone interfered. Until the day comes when we can go to the docs & get a prescription for an Exit pill, go home, get tucked up in bed with your family by your side & a bottle of good single malt, then there will always be the chance that innocents will get hurt. There's a bridge on the M1 near me which seems to be a favourite with jumpers, we had 2 last year & it causes chaos. M1 closed for the day & gridlock from Nottingham to Bradford. I response to HP, yes I would try & stop a jumper, not because I didn't want him/her take their own life, but for the inconvenience it would cause to innocents, plus pity the poor barsteward who's car/lorry he lands on. It's rude & inconsiderate. Would I stop someone trying to shoot themselves, like feck! I'd clear the area & let them get on with it First rule of first aid... limit the casualties

I'm not sure its particularly helpful to debate the best way to end it all on here.

Not a particularly good advert for Christchurch is it? An Eastern European desperate to get out (says the man who lives in Littlehampton).

He'd probably spent months getting all the way across Europe only to find Tucktonia wasn't there any more.
