Another novice question

Here's one that probably hasnt been asked on the forum before. Last week I was out on my first RIB open water trip from Helford River to Falmouth. My teenage daughter looked at the depthfinder at 22 metres and asked me 'what exactly is down there'? What kinds of interesting sealife could be there ? (I probably wont pass her your answers !).

There is my old radio , mobile phone & Neils expensive watch in the solent ! That and several million tonnes of mud & sand ! ( oh & the press would have you believe the odd fish trying to survive the pollution and toxic waste).

Any & all rocks instantly appear 3 inches infront of your prop!

Metres??? What are you using them for??? I always set mine to fathoms - much more nautical..................

I have depth display in feet (as all good seaman should have) , but shows tenths of a foot ! Work that one out - not sure yamaha get the idea of imperial measurements !

One of the never ending British quirks - we say out boat is XYZ Metres, we go at knt, for miles , with horsepower on a boat that weighs a certain number of kilos (for our trailers with 10 inch wheels) use litres per hour of petrol (worring about it being more then £5 a gallon) , looking at charts in meters depth of water , on a bearing of whatever ( true ? magnetic ? chart ? ). all so we can get back to marinas that charge you by the lenghtof you boat (in feet ! )

No wonder I ignore most of the numbers.

Don't know about your area, but you can get a glimpse of stuff from the California Central Coast at my website.

because my chart and tide tables are marked in meters... and sticking to a single unit reduces the potential for a cockup...

Firstly, what happened to you on Fri? I was stood around on the Ferryboat pontoon like a lemon at 1pm as arranged.

Secondly, surprisingly little. My 14yo son will surf any conditions all day long, but he has issues when it comes to sliding over the side of the boat in deep water. His imagination runs a little riot. Having snorkeled and spear-fished these waters for many years, I try to assure him that there's nothing that would be remotely interested in him.

Wrasse are the most common fish, followed by Pollock, both are pretty dim and not worth un-loading a spear for. You'll get a few Spider crabs dotted about at this time of year. Bass are the prized catch, but not exactly plentiful followed by mullet (yuk). Occasionally, young seals will take a look, but they're not too brave, mature seals can be a little less so and give one a bit of a start.
That's about it, I've not met a dolphin in the water yet, but live in hope. I'd love to swim with a Basking shark, but I'm afraid that the 'wooly jumper' brigade would jump up and down at the prospect.
