Ivan,
Not sure exactly where you were at the time but if in sheltered water the bottom would consist of mud/silt with a relatvely unstable sea/river bed with relativly little life compared to coastal seas.
To give you an idea what can be seen and how clear our waters can be view this link and the water was not as clear as it could be due to some strong winds.
