I know that's the best logic but as polwart said, I'm often about the boat, especially when wakeboarding. Sometimes I dart to the back of the boat to lift the tow line, or grab a jacket before it blows overboard etc. Always an excuse I suppose.

It looks like the the kill cord was found wrapped around the steering column, there is some more info here:

We were at Pentewan last week and watched this whole thing happen as we were coming in they were going out with the ringo being held by some people in the water behind the boat then the engine was started completely out of the water and reved up three or four times before being lowered into the water.Then the Dory went out at full speed to were we had just been just minutes earlier (tide half way in calm sea) 2 mins later a man came running up to us yelling "the boy has fell out" and we seen the boat spinning round in circles for 5 mins before hitting the rocks and stopping shortly afterwards then a red inflatable brought the two people in 20 seconds later. Hope they are both ok.

i got back from pentewan friday,i left before it happened but i did see the boat clowning around the day before very close to the bhouys that mark out the bathing area,i hate to think if headed towards the youngsters swimming,i will be going back next year but i would imagine the site would bring in some safety issues

I agree,i did not even have to show my insurance,but was told to get a sticker from reception, The beach hut asked if i had a blue sticker which i did not but he said next time show me your insurance.I love the place and will go back next year.

They were going quite quickly as anyone would,like what i would of done, as for the boat hitting the bottom i dont understand that?

we had this with a novice boater many years ago he ran the engine up on the beach for a few mins before launching until we said you will burn out the impeller ,,he then said in a cocky manor ,you can run it for a few mins like the Rnli boys do when they are comming down the beach with no harm ,,he was a bit miffed when we explained that they have 2 water tanks on each side of the trailer ,

IMV, if the guy was driving like an idiot the previous day, the guys that operate the boat launch on the beach should've refused to launch him. Although Pentewan is a great facility for the camper/boater, Unfortunately, it's also a bit of a magnet for less than responsible first timers.

On paper it gets checked every time - Reality? Probably gets tested about 1 in every 4 or 5 "major leg" starts.

Grim reading and I must confess, very easy to over look, "I'll connect my kill cord when we are out the harbour..." etc etc. I've done the move around the boat and accidentally switch the engine off thing too.

I think I'll be thinking about this and changing my ways.

What about an electronic kill cord, how good are they? This would mean walking aound the boat would be safer and only works if away from the RIB i.e fall over. How quickly do they kill the engine? Soon enough not to be hit by the prop?
