How old was the boat and outboard, I didnt think any outboard in the last 15 + years didnt have one as standard?

Now, one bypassed i can understand.

Howerver I tend to belive the CG more.

So, now the life jacket is not new, hes not going to wear it?!

It really anoys me when people blame "freak waves", "weather", "phases of the moon" or anything other than complete incompetance or lack of common sense.

mercs/mariners tend to have kill cord switches which are just toggle switches with the kill cord fitting over it-we have had loadsa fast fishing boats here running without the cord itself and with the switch flicked to run. Tend to change the habit after a course though

so if it was a merc/mariner it was a case of
"the facility was there, i just didnt bother to use it" same as life jackets untderthe seat.

same as "freak wave" meaning "wasn't paying attention"

the only freak waves I've hear of are Rogue waves, and certainly wasn't one of them!

It can happen to the best of us, but why not admit it was your own fault for not using kill cord, paying attention etc

could it be Insurance?? Guilt ,re nephew??

I think these 3 lines say it all really:-

Quote:
"I was only wearing the lifejacket because it was a new one my friend had bought me"

"I know the boat inside out. I've been out in it thousands of times and have never come out of it. There's probably not even a one in a million chance of it happening again."

Ian said the boat did not have a "kill cord", which cuts the engine if pulled, as coastguards had reported.
Unless there's some really bad journalistic licence going on, it sounds like a combination of complacency, ignorance and stupidity.

(Hint, if it aint got a killcord, fit one. S'not rocket science...)

report that i read,, mca news page,, ,says when the boat was recovered ,the kill cord was found to be wrapped around the steering coloume, thats why i mentioned earlier in the thread that it may have been fitted, but perhaps getting it wrapped around the steering wheel after a few turns and if its only been clipped onto a persons ,eg belt loop on a pair of jeans when he goes over the side the attachment ,eg belt loop could break leaving the kill cord in place .or it may have been left like that for years ,,,
tel ya what bet he checks it next time .

The bloke who sold me my boat said it didn't have a switch for a kill cord... then eventually admitted maybe that was what that little toggle thing was for that he'd never bothered with !
