I know he got what he deserved for running without insurance but it's got to be said, that's a lot to lose!

Sorry I may have misinterpreted or been misinformed in my original response. It seems the boat was not insured - but he is trying to claim (possibly from the supplier/manufacturer) for his loss. See here:

That sounds more like trying to find someone else to blame rather than a preconcieved insurance job.
