aluminium project

Hi ribsters

I have been looking for a good aluminium welder for the last (3 months ) and I have found one , I am going to build a 10-12m rib with a little help from Adam Younger.

The conditions the rib will be running in are on average 3m but get up to 4-5m with not much trouble, the rib will have no transom and be a self draining deck.

I am in two minds about Jets or surface drives; I can’t have stern drives as the sea creatures get in, on and around creating a major maintenance problem for me. If anyone has some pros and cons it would be great?

I plane is to put a list of everything I can think of on here in the next few days, everyone’s ideas would be much appreciated. Then is a letter to Adam and I hope to get the drawings underway within a month. Exciting times.

Thanks

Don't think he talks to Kiwis , much prefer to eat em.

Be sure to post the build as this sound like an interesting project. Are you having it built in UK or New Zealand

Sorry missed this thread.

Sounds like you are describing an Ocean Dynamics to me - as designed by the late - great - Shaun White.

Still built by the same people - they do self build hulls etc as well - could save you a hell of a lot of work!!!

http://www.mustangmarine.com/ribworker/index.htm

Jets and no transoms as standard. They even do one that looks cool.

Shaun White did a great job with ocean dynamics, however i want somthing a little faster. At the price they charge i won't be going anywhere near them, aluminium is cheaper here so its best i build myself, don't worry i am not building alone, i found a good ali boat builder and we got a little deal going.

has anyone been on the ( http://www.technohull.gr/profile.php?lang=en )? it would be great to hear how the hull is? what it handles like? i am looking at a completly different rib but Adam designed it and i would like to hear any information about his work.

Heard nothing but good reports about Adam and his designs. I don't think aluminium lends itself very well to fancy hull shapes like GRP though.

A lot depends on usage regarding drives. Surface drives are great for long fast runs in calmish waters - jets are better for shallow water etc etc. Just a thought but has anyone ever built a RIB using normal shaft drives? For all round use there is still little to touch shaft drives.

Thanks coders

i would automaticlly instal hamiltons but they take up so much of the boat, i have sterndrives at the moment and every week i have to get it out of the water and get the trustee leatherman and scrape the bastards off. i am not so keen on surface drives and shaft driven would not get the speed i desire. do you know what the maintance is like on surface drives?

they messed it all up with the aircraft wingon pic above, i like the solent rescue rib the best-to me it just says get out the way.

That was a few years ago, and they don't seem to have been very popular. There's a bit more information (mainly negative and speculative) here: http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1786

How about Trimax?

John

These are prob the biggest makers of surface drives.

There was also an interesting looking drive fitted to a Pascoe at Ribex one year - can't remember the name - think they were Scandanavian origin. JK will know as I posted photos of them when he asked a while ago.

Even you should know that oil rigs don't plane very well.

Eco-drive I think. Brief mention here: http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5779

How about the Yellowfin VSD? I don't know when it's going to be on the market but they seems to have quite a few prototype installations. More here: http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=16844

Ok i think my mind is made up on this one, jets are the way to go. The best jets "Hamilton" are made in NZ , easy for parts plus there local so thats what ill be using.

the problem i face then is getting over 50kts, hamilton say its pretty hard . pressmans ribs has a hamilton do you know what speed he gets (around 35-40)

Read a few past post about jets and Alan Pridy thinks they are crap in a big swell. I went out on a jet boat a week ago and it was blowing 40kts but here that means around 5m, geuss what? it was fine, whats he on about? have you experianced Jets going to pot in a side on swell? i have spoken with a few manufacturers that have installed hamiltons and they all seem very happy.

Don't know about the best - KaMeWa jets are pretty good - owned by Rolls Royce.

have you used both then coders? i have not seen many ribs with Rolls Royce jets. hamilton seem well used in NZ's commercial relm, i have to say i am not an expert on jets so all comments are taken into consideration.

madmat do you run on surface drives?

Jhon i am right in thinking the yellow fin never got off the ground, am i not?

thanks
