I would NOT say it's complete bollocks - the deeper in the water a prop is the more grip it has. In very rough seas there are bound to be times when a surface drive is strugging for grip more than a normal drive. Think about it - if the props are very close to the surface it is bound to happen that they come out of the water more often.

Regardless of the above it doesn't really explain why many of the fastest offshore race boats are driven by surface drives! Not too mention that they are also generally more reliable with big power!

ps Surface drive props are designed to work that close to the surface - they may have slow acceleration, but grip well at top speeds!

Racing tends not to occur in really rough conditions - if it's too rough it becomes a game of survival.

Ere, codders, give my mate "Fabio" a call and tell him how he can make his boats perform better in the rough, he's designs haven't won much stuff with his own design surface drive.

no probably not -- i believe that one of the virgin challengers had a surface drive - but that would have been because, surface drives are only good for a fast run in calm conditions of course.......... the atlantic is always calm.

yet again 'bollocks' springs to mind.

big outboards does give ya speed Cod, but you know that don't you? I think most could probably agree surface drives are not usually used in "rough water" applications. Anyone disagree?
