I don't think so. I am confident that when the boat is handed over the boat's rubbing strake will stay in place until 2005. The sea trials have been encouraging and have helped to identify an area of opportunity for improvement.

you will see ch's boat when it is finished.

in my opinion an ali hull will do all the things you want it to. it will outlast a grp hull as long as it is constructed well. you don't need to worry about nicking the gell coat or bumping the odd rock or log.
from my experience alot of people think that they can build a boat. well sure maybe you can. but will it perform well and handle the beating one will put on it. aluminum hulls do need to be constructed a certain way otherwise they will fall apart. it takes years of experience to know what will work and what won't.

Eksrae I am seriously in that path but I'm looking all possibilities though. However, from what I have seen so far I think that you may be correct and although an aly RIB may be a bit (NOT A LOT) more expensive in some cases than the Fibre Glass equivalent is much more rigid and will outlast it IMHO and the humble opinion of the manufacturers.

Will see a few RIBs in November in Sweden with Janis possibly and will take it from there.
Hope the horses boat appears sometime soon so that I can have a look at that too.

Well thank you for your advice, I am sure the UK boat builders will be pleased to learn that not only are they using the wrong material but also they don't have the experience to make a boat, but you do apparently !

I would have thought the material should be chosen to meet the needs of the customer and its intended purpose. Why did CH choose Ali for a boat he was going to cruise around Florida ? is it to make it Hurricane proof or is a metal boat the ideal solution in the heat of a Florida summer ?

well pete
i am not saying that uk builders do not have the experience to make a boat out of ali. there is people all over the place that do not. it is like everthing else in this world some build crap boats and do not care as long as they get a buck in the pocket. i see it happen here as well.
as for ch cruising in the warm waters of florida well good on him i hope he enjoys it!!

Am Surprised, as ali is the topic, that no-one has commeneted on this yet..

You will have to dig about to find the boat -- is not a RIB tho, ali all over, the 'tubes' (that are not tubes) are Ali, so therefore it is a hard boat..

A few chaps I have spoken to over here who worked for zodiac speak of them very highly... and they're not hugely expensive although well outside my budget anyway. I was quoted circa $75K new (30 GBP) for a 6.5m with all the kit...
