It will depend on the length of the hull too. So, a 4m searider with 4 blokes will need almost the full 50hp. However, a 5-5.5m rib (that is say rated to 120hp) will probably not need the full 120hp for 4 people or so.

However, I'm of the view that it's best to go for the max hp but with the lightest engine.

PS 'blokes' are defined as a minimum of 90kgs :-)

A SR4 with a 40 or 50 on the back will do 32 to 35 kts (whisper managed 37 kts SOG with the tide on this years Nacho run), and at anything over 30 kts a SR4 feels very quick and exciting. A SR5.4 needs a 70 or 90 on the back, I use a SR5.4 with a 50 on the transom and it gets on the plane and does the job it's meant for, but it's by no means exhilarating.

A SR4 is really only a two seater, I guess you could make a SR5.4 into a four seater fairly easily.

Yes my 4 stroke is new so very fuel efficient. I was achieving around 1 litre per nm with my old 2 stroke 40 autolube

Thanks for the replies, it's good to get your opinions. The only reason I would by a SR4 is for the sheer cheapness of the thing. 3K for a mint example is cheap fun on water if you ask me. It doesn't quite tick the boxes for me and the SR5.4 seems to. Fuel economy is to be expected I suppose, my Aerotec with the AE30 Yamaha burnt 30L in one day in Falmouth so it's something to put up with.

For fun per pound you cannot do better than a SR4 or SR5.4.

Do also bear in mind that Ribnet is rife with Searider nuthuggers. Many of us have bought boats which are *shudder* not seariders, for sub 6 grand and enjoyed them very much. It is sometimes worth remembering that they are not the only decent second had rib available.

Absolutely, lots of other nice small ribs out there. The important thing is to get out on the water and enjoy yourself.

I was reading this forum for years before joining in and listening to the shall we say old guard and you would think there was no other Rib fit for purpose.

But that said I had a 5.4 searider and up to know has been my favorite Rib and I would buy another.

No real experience of them but all the ones I've seen looked a bit 'shallow of v'. That said the name "Zodiac" is synonymous with inflatable boats over in the U.S. of Stateside.

It's tough because all the SR's are proven, there's so many turds rolled in glitter on the market (they can't be polished) that's it's distracting a little. I was looking to buy around April but I'm bringing that forward to secure a better price if the right vessel comes along.
