Been in both - LOVE the RIB. Thats why I have one! Great fun, easy to tow, launch and retrieve. Lack of cabin? So what - the missus does not come out but the mates do!

Although a solid ski boat the Picton Royale is not really the best boat for blasting around the Solent.
On a well designed RIB the tubes do act as shock absorbers to some extent and offer great stability at rest. But a traditional power boat (ie. long, narrow and pointy with a deep vee) will soak up the chop just as well. The vast majority of 'hardboats' tend to compromise this ride quality for stability and interior space. You just have to decide which is more important to you. I use both. My 8.4 twin engine Redbay is tough, spacious, versitile and very stable at high and low speeds. A friend has a Phantom 21 with 200hp and will blow my RIB out of the water. Even in a moderate swell/chop the Phantom can be trimmed to cope comfortably and it's tons more fun to drive. Thats said, I have had the Redbay out in some very silly seas and I never fealt like she wouldn't get me home. I have literally filled it with water stuffing into the back of a big wave. I just hit the drain trunk lines and carried on, I think it would have been a different story in the Phantom with no bouyancy.
However, I wouldn't go fishing in my rib, - hooks and tubes - bad mix

So there you have it, lots of waffling and no real conclusion

Had both and loved both,

The main difference for me is that smaller powerboats all tend to have seats, and sitting on the hard floor makes for an unconfy ride, even when the hull is the the same. the vast majority of RIBs tend to have a jockey console that lends it self to standing and allowing your legs to take alot of of the hard landing out of the lumps, unless your lucky enough to have some susspension seats !!!

Pays yer money and takes yer chance ! Just make sure you test drive anything you are thinking of buying in some proper waves !
