Accom recommendations

Happy New Year all!

The missus and I are thinking about trying to sort out a week/5days on the west coast of Scotland in May before the midges get going. We considered the couples retreat at Portavadie but all their accom seems to be booked solid from May onwards if their website is to be believed. Anyone got any experiences of boat friendly self catering accomodation around the firth of clyde or Oban-ish? I guess at a push we could camp but might still be a bit parky in May for a full week.

Just across the Loch from Portavadie, East Loch Tarbert, has a load of B&B, self-catering cottages and a marina which I've used when Portavadie has been full.

CC in May you have two Ribnet cruises around the Oban area which might interest you. ERR and BIBOA are well established and have threads on here. I myself base myself at the village of Tayvallich on the sound of Jura. There are plenty of good self catering opportunities for you just google and pick. If you can be more specific re your area there are plenty of people on here that can help you. Hope this helps.

Any specific recommendations?

Good call re the ERR. Is there likely to be much accom left at this late stage tho?

Sorry, no specific recommendations CC. We had our own accommodation aboard our sticks and string powered craft but I couldn't help noticing a load of B&B as we sailed into the harbour...

Is it just for two people?

If so, then the "Wee Barn" (google it) in Tayvallich would suit you very well. I've not stayed there (as we need more space - so have been next door, and various other places in the village) but I know people who have. Its not so far away that you couldn't tag on a night in a B&B or tent to include the ERR at the start / finish.

If the idea of staying at a proper marina was what appealed about Portavadie (its a good location but not much else there) then there are Cottages at Craobh Haven too. I crashed on JK's floor there one year, and it appeared to be a compact, clean and functional terraced house, which would serve you well if the primary focus was getting afloat. There were a whole collection of similar houses...

There should be plenty of accom on the West Coast and Clyde in May though as it is term time.

Hi how much is my brother in law paying you to advertise for him!! If Tayvallich us a possibility you can buddy up with me to go up to ERR. There's plenty of self catering houses in the village. Great cruising area. If you like give me or Poly a ring. Cheers B Sent from my iPhone using Rib.net

Tbh Portavadie was fraught with problems (for one thing it's a long tow to still be in the F of C) but we've been there with my folks as floating guests and the couples retreat looked nice.

Saw the Wee Barn but it's reserved from mid-April to mid-June. I will be doing ERR one year for sure but I think SWMBO was thinking more of a romantic retreat with a bit of boating thrown in to keep me happy. I'm sorely tempted though...

If not the beauty of Tayvallich then try Loch Lomond Grt place for a wee romantic break on the 'Bonnie' banks

Can heartily recommend here:

Primrose Cottage - Bed and Breakfast accommodation in Ardfern, Craignish, Argyll

Owner is a boater so understands our needs... Short walk to Ardfern Marina (inc pontoons and decent chandlery) so a good place as a base or for an overnight trip out.

Marina | Ardfern Yacht Centre, by Lochgilphead, Scotland

Stayed here when I did my Advanced Powerboat course and would readily go back - 5 hour drive and a ferry for me to there but worth it.

Have a good time

Steve

Our cottage...

http://www.cottages-and-castles.co.u...ncottage*N407/

Plenty of room to keep the boat, the Summer Isles and some of the best cruising on the West to be found locally.

If its too far North then I can recommend Easdale just South of Oban. I have a feeling accommodation might be an issue in May as there are a few local weddings around then iirc.

Ardmaddy estate also do S/C cottages, some have their own slipway. Lovely cottages with stunning views.

Booked with these in the end. The real advantage is they do a Mon - Fri let which means we can break the journey with the folks on the way up and down. There's a boat yard 3 miles south and a marina 3 miles north both of which have slips.
