I find it so contradictory that they harp on about everyone wearing a kill cord (which is a good idea!), but they don't use them them selves! I wonder what the logic is. And no, I'm afraid I don't agree that because they've been trained at the holy grail that is Poole that they are better helms than anyone else afloat.

Interesting tid bit is there are kill cords on ex US Coast Guard Boats but not on ex US Navy boats. I had to add one to mine, but not everyone does.

The laws of physics say that a boat at any fixed steering angle will do a circle of what ever size and then run you over, if you are in the water.
Now boat may not come back and run you over due to other effects, but could kill a swimmer or other boater... All pleasure boats should use a kill cord, all the time.....
He must of being turning hard (having fun) when they got thrown out, so should of concidered all safety before carrying out such manuvers.

You don't have to be turning hard to get turfed out of a RIB - it's surprisingly easy and can happen in quite benign circumstances...

...always wear a Killcord!

agree on that too . I have been maintaining a mariner 30 for our local slsc its ex rnli and its simply fitted with a throttle return spring . The idea is if one the lifeguards are thrown out of the boat in surf the other can simply take over without having a dead engine in the surf break and losing the boat .

It bloody lethal , after a few days use on the beach the throttle sticks anyway . They use the boat for IRB racing practice where a casualty is collected then they return to beach and the driver sprints up the beach to a finish line . The boat is contantly driven up the beach flat out and left throwing sand everywhere with the motor going flat out . they had a brand new mariner 30 this year and had stuffer the rubber engine mounts in 3 weeks
I no longer volunteer to fix it for them

Dunno about other bigger lifeboats , but as far as iam concerned the biggest danger on any surf beach is the lifeguards in their IRB
