19 Meter Delta's

Saw this the other day up here in sunny Aberdeen's harbour and thought that it may be of interest to some of you other ribbers. 8 of these are on their way and have started trials on launch and recovery from the mother ships. 2 x 1000 Cat water jets! More info in Delta's website if you are interested

There were three in Port Edgar (nr Edinburgh) last year - Apparently they will be deployed around the coast to act as rescue craft for BP.
Understand that they are designed to do 40 knots in any weather conditions.

Yes, that one was in Holyhead for some work, and that they are support/emergency vessels for BP oilrigs.

I heard from someone who was doing said work that it was equipped with a fully functional operating theatre!!!!

Not sure I would want someone taking my appendix out in 40ft waves

But the tubes don't touch the water; the designer obviously got it wrong.

similar sized RN ship inboard of the Delta tops out at 14knots...wonder if large ribs like that'll ever replace conventional hulls..

Mother ships all built in China over the last couple of years. All named Caledonian ***, Vision, Vigilance etc. Boats are to be used in conjunction with helicopters as cover for BP platforms instead of each platform having its own dedicated standby boat. Caused a bit of fuss when suggested initially but still to be implemented. Watched them do recovery in the harbour here and it is a big lump to have hanging from 2 wires. Would love to see the same operation carried out in a good North sea chop. Was interesting enough seeing 6.5m seariders recovered.

Putting the fuel in a 250 ETEC is bad enough......... and lauch and recovery could be interesting on a steep slippery slipway.

Probably cost about the same to run as your Etec - remember it will use red diesel.

Red juice or not me thinks twin 1000hp motors might drink plenty more than an 250HP Etec....

Why oh why did the MOD spec such rubbish engines. 1200hp in a Challenger tank they're ok. 800hp in a boat they fall apart.

The new ones go alright with the 1000hp MTUs though.
