Hi all, we have just put down a deposit on an immaculate second hand Ribeye 600, for the family to use. We have the test drive next weekend followed by the final paperwork and hopefully bringing it home!

The four of us are excited already...... and the bank cards are taking a hit for all the extras that "must be bought"!

Looking forward to RIBbing and meeting you all.

Thanks for the welcome - and hats off to crossing the channel in the boat; I'm guessing it rode the waves as well as I expect the Ribeyes to?

I'm near Portsmouth so will mainly be using it in the West Sussex/Portsmouth/Gosport/Solent/IoW area.

Thanks. We're all looking forward to it. Our two young boys got V excited and I think we're excited too..... but also preparing ourselves for stopping the boys trying their hardest to sample the Solent!

As you are in Portsmouth, I'm sure we will see you out and about on the water

The Camber dock in Old Portsmouth is a great place to launch when you decide you are ready to go playing in The Solent.

I looked around the area and the Camber did come out as being a pretty good choice of launch ramp. (We were down there yesterday looking at another RIB). I believe you need to call QHM on Ch11 to go across to the smal boat channel from there don't you?

Welcome to the forum and wonderful world of RIBs. The Solent is an excellent playground with many places to explore. I'm sure you'll be up for some cruises in the future, in the meanwhile if there's anything we can help you with please don't hesitate to post it on RIBnet.

PS: There will always be someone willing to ride RIB shotgun on your maiden voyage, just ask!

Hi Andy, thanks for the offer. I probably won't be able to fit anyone in for shotgun as the missus and kids have claimed that position!

I have a reasonable amount of experience in boats in general, but this is the first one I've owned. I think care of the engine is about the only thing I'm not 100% familiar with. But that'll come, I'm sure!

The Yamaha engine I assume you get with the boat is easily maintained. Every 100hrs or yearly have it serviced properly by a good team. We use Warsash marine who are Yam and Ribeye chaps, Lee does loads locally and including Portsmouth charter boats. I would recommend you flush through the engine with clean water after each use if poss. On the Yams there is a small hose connector so just clip hoselock connectors on each time and wash through, No need to run engine up, in fact if on hose dont, If you use muffs at the bottom run the engine and listen for alarm saying it is overheating, but five mins on cold wash or longer on the clip hose is good

If lifting the engine up each time on rams ask Lee at Warsash to show you the best way to keep them in good nick or if about I can show you

Try to go out in company with another boat, not on your own, for the first few trips. That way you have someone to give you a hand / tow if you have any mechanical issues with the new boat. Loads of people on here will be happy to cruise in company with you for your first few trips out.

So connecting a (running) hose to the engine while it's off will flush through sufficiently then Ian? Or did I misunderstand? Never had to flush the engines before so it's all new!

Some outboards are flushed using muffs over the water intakes with the engine idling. The larger Yamaha 4 strokes have a flush connector which is used with the engine off (just connect a hose and let it run for 5 mins).

Yep on Yams and probably others there is a small dark grey hose with a connector on the side of engine outside the case. Unscrew with fingures and connect one of these Accessory Adaptor: 2289 - Hozelock to the hose section ( not the engine block- that is just a blank holder) , then attach the hose with Hose end connector (12.5mm & 15mm): 2166 - Hozelock and wash through. DO NOT run engine if using this system- not needed and will damage it. The water will wash through all sections and even come out of the tell tale so as this coools and is no longer salty, you should be done.

I connect almost everytime and run cold wash as I cover boat so ten mins I guess.

If you use engine muffs near the prop then you need to run engine but hose above is good and ample for looking after it.

You will be amazed how many dealers dont know where that flush is!!! I have attached an image to show what it looks like. Turn the nurled plastic cap and then connect to that not the base it is on block with. May be left or right and side but same idea depending on engine size

Can even be done afloat if on a pontoon . lift engine and attach same way

Perhaps "Shotgun" wasn't the correct term to use. I meant in support boat capacity.

Yes you call QHM on CH 11 and ask permission to cross Camber to Ballast buoy (or Ballast to Camber). Ballast is the red post just north of the entrance to Haslar marina and is the point you have to leave or join the small boat channel when leaving or returning Camber or Gunwharf

Haha, fair one Andy - it's ok, I knew what you meant.

Ian, thanks for that advice regarding the flushing - that sounds much easier to connect to that hose than trying to find out where/how to fit muffs and running the engine etc. I've got plenty of Hozelock stuff in various boxes in the garage so should be fine.

It's a Yam 115, four stroke.

Cheers Chris, I seem to recall the need to request QHM permission on Ch 11 to cross Ballast/Camber but thought I'd check.
