Newbie teen wants a RIB!

Hey guys, i'm new to the forums and i'm hoping on buying a RIB next year.

I've been a sailor for a while, and earlier this year took my RYA PB2 course. Since then, my Laser project has seemed pretty boring!

I'm hoping on buying a RIB next year with what i can sell the sailing dinghy for, and what i can save up until then. My parents are also willing to put some money in as my dad is a keen fisher, though i doubt he'll actually be fishing from it.

This gives me a maximum of £3000
(Fuel isn't a problem, and i'm ready to save for some repairs)

I've fallen in love with the SR4, and it seems to be a good boat which fits nicely in my price range. (Bring on the SR gang!)

What would you recommend for me as a boat to have a bit of fun in and explore with in the Forth? If the Sea Rider, is there anything i need to reconsider about it?

Thanks in advance!
Lewis. :-)

Welcome to the forum Lewis.

I think there's a few members near to you so maybe you can arrange to meet up with them along with your parents to see what kind of size/shape/horsepower you would like.
One member I can think of lives not far from you and has an SR4 Camtheribman http://rib.net/forum/member.php?u=7365 and MDT http://rib.net/forum/member.php?u=2635 who also lives local to you. I think MDT has something to do with a club but is also rebuilding a 5.4meter searider so he should be good to talk too.

Yeah, Camy's down at the club with me so he'll be a great help. I pass his boat a few times a week :P

I'll have a talk to them and see what they've got to say. There's plenty choice around here with all the marinas and clubs around the forth. Bosuns Locker at Port Edgar had a SR the other week, extremely over priced but there's some good people to talk to down there.

I'm giving myself advice now!

There's always plenty of SR4s for sale - you should get a really nice one for £3k.

Agreed, you should be able to get a decent 4m Searider for around £2k

Welcome to the world of boats, and yes just about everywhere is over-priced. However once you've bought something, it's not impractical to run it on a budget and make-do until you can afford to upgrade.

Hi Lewis, and welcome to RIBnet - and to ribbing on the Forth (a rather under-rated venue, it's a pretty good place to get out and about).

Have you seen this one: http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/YAM079

Probably see you out on the water sometime. All the best

Partially correct. They certainly are similar (I have both). They leak, they rust, their electrics fail too often, people point at them, they're slower than their engines suggest, the seats are bum killers and they'll tempt your ego to write cheques yer ass can't cash.

However, I've seen a 90 sink , the driver actually swimming ashore. Never seen a RIB in that situation

Wow, great response! :O

Sorry i've taken a while to reply, i wasn't expecting this many replies. I also accidentally unchecked email notifications. I just came on and noticed my forum with two pages. I'm impressed!

I'm feeling really re-assured and pleased that a good rib isn't out of my reach!

I can see the Forth from my window and occasionally see a rib go past. I'll wave if i see any of you! lol

That boats great! Looks like a really nice package, and it's older than me! Good to know it's not out of my reach.

Thanks for the advice. I'm really looking forward to my first proper boat! (The kind where wet suits and swimming aren't required!)

Yes, reading through the forums, Sea Riders seem to be very popular and all the owners are very pleased with them. It seems you get your money's worth!

I think an SR4 would be a perfect boat for me.
