New Member in Singapore

I'm a new member of RIBNet, based here in Singapore. I'm from Auckland, New Zealand, and have a wonderful Rayglass Protector 8.5m with me here. I've added a photo album of SeakingSam in Singapore and her home waters around northern New Zealand. Looking forward to engaging with others using their RIBs in all conditions....

We keep her in dry stack in Raffles Marina, on the Johor River, Singapore.

The boating license in Singapore is ridiculously complex and takes several months, lots of exams, but no VHF training, go figure. Every boat required to have transponder or AIS so that Coastguard (national police) can interrogate constantly. armed patrol boats everywhere .....

I was admiring the electronics/console. I'd be interested to know what influenced you to go all Simrad - what has your experience been like with the kit?

The Simrad radio looked mighty familiar to me, I've just realised why, it's an exact clone of the old Navman 7100, with a 7200 handset on it.

I know Raffles very well. Does Jeffery still run the boat yard? We will be powering into Raffles early December this year. We have scheduled an 8 hour service stop on our Around the World Powerboat Race against the Americans. Www.circumnavigationrecord.com. The Simrad offered 4G Broadband radar, which gives strong target definition right down to the bow of the boat - great resolution and great range - the Raymarine equivalent couldn't match it. The structureScan was also an excellent option, effectively high resolution side scan under the boat. Perfect for resolving bottom conditions. The network integration across two crew stations was excellent - truly plug and play - everything fitted right in, and finally, the Simrad network integrated the Yamaha engines. The fit has been excellent in every respect

Jeffrey's still there, doing his thing. Unfortunately, SeakingSam and I will be back in Auckland in April, so not here in December. My December will be out of Whangamata Beach on the Coromandel, in New Zealand....

Alan, I've just been over your web-site - what an extraordinary challenge you have before you and your team! My hat's off to you - just phenomenal ! That average speed is going to be tough to beat over a circumnavigation, particularly factoring in storms, breakdowns, injury and borders. Who knows, I might just be back at Raffles to offer you a cold beer ! - and I thought SeakingSam was the fastest thing up the Johor River - hah !

My brother in Law lives at Bethalls Beach on the West coast - if I was to live anywhere in the world the Coromandel would be on my list!
