Hello from Poland!! ;-))

Hi all!
I've been on this forum for a while now, and i thought its time to introduce myself. I've been working with various boats and watersports for 13 years and January 2011 i bought my first 8 meter Rib, a Humber Ocean Pro 8m from a friend in this forum. I've customized it a bit myself....;-))

and after...

Below is a link to my gallery: RIB HUMBER OceanPro

My rib is really great and im happy with it, but im planning to swap the engine with a larger 300/350hp verado or a 300 xs mercury.
Greetings !

You had a lot of work to do to a boat from a "friend". I take it you got it for a good price?!

How come you glassed over the rear well? How can you drain the inner hull?

Looks good though, however as you say, slightly underpowered as I think others have said when the previous owner posted on here.

That's the great thing about this site - any size / age / make goes!

Welcome both of you!

HUMBER P4VWL:
I've been having max 8 passangers because i did not have the time to swap for a larger engine during the summer. During wavy sea the underpowering feeling was minimal, but worse on calm sea.
I had to put down a lot of work to get it to the configuration i want. Unfortunately i bought it at a normal market price as there was no sale at the time ;( .
Its good that we did the modifications ourselfs....
As for the rear rebuild, I find it better. I have laminated the hole in front locker, and added additional outflow of water with a stopper at the transom. Water from deck drains through the original hole.
Thanks for welcome!
Paul

Thank you very much. The site is full of information and very useful as I am a a novice. Also some great advice on places to visit and organised trips. So exciting.

Engine Electronic Tilt

Hi Chaps

I have taken my new RIB out only twice and find the engine a little heavy for me when tilting it. Could someone advise if I should get the engine modified (quoted approx £700) or should I try and trade in my engine for one with an electronic tilt. My terminology is probably incorrect but that's how I can best describe it.

Any tips would be most helpful.

Many thanks
Natalie

When you say have the engine modified do you mean a trim/tilt added to it?

Other RIBs I have been in had an electronic device which tilted the engine up/down. So I am looking for something similar. Someone suggested maybe trading in my engine for one that had this device already fitted.

Natalie, The "device" you are referring to is known as power-trim-and-tilt (or PTT for short). It is usually not economical to retrofit this to an existing engine, especially not if you don't have the mechanical skills to DIY the work). Trading in the engine would ususally work out cheaper / easier.

However your profile says you only have a 20HP engine. Why do you want PTT. Is it to adjust the engine trim on the move so you can maximum performance / grip / speed / fuel economy or is it simply for lifting the engine when launching and recovering?

Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

I manage to tilt a 2 stroke 20HP no problems. I think I would be fine with a 4 stroke too although they are a good bit heavier. Could there be something wrong with your "technique" or could there be a catch sticking? Perhaps if you are quite "petite" then you might be able to work something out that gives you some mechanical advantage / leverage rather than spending £700 on an upgrade.

I am new to all this so wasn't sure what it was called :-)

Basically the reason for wanting the PTT is that I am petite but also a couple of weeks after buying the RIB I was told I have tennis elbow in both arms so can be quite painful. I don't want it to hinder me going out.

It is a 4 Stroke Mercury engine. Any suggestions would be most helpful.
Many thanks
Natalie

Natalie.
When you start going you should have the engine tilted max down. Is that what you do ?
Ofcourse the best thing is a engine that has a electronic trimm, but it should be ok without the trim anyway.

Poor Mrs Wilk!! :-)

I can manage it now but arms will get worse so a PTT will make things much easier and more manageable too.

Natalie,

I retro fitted a PT unit to mine. The (gubbed) unit itself cost me £100, the repair kit another £50 odd, then added a couple of evenings of foul language & sheared bolts to remove the old manual one. I'd say that's a fair price, specally if the PT gubbins is new! (you'll also need extra wiring to the helm, and a mod to add the switch to the "go lever")

Pol does have a call tho'. If you can get a quote for a P/X or can punt your current engine there is a good chance at that kind of HP that you may be able to do it for less than the upgrade, and / or you get a new engine. Alternative view is if you do the upgrade, you know the history of the rest of the engine.....

Worth checking out both options tho'.

Mrs Willk still gets my deepest sympathies.

Oh no, one willk is enough in this world. Still you could make Mrs W an offer. I think so long as you agree to take the old landrover, the boat and stinking outboard and all the diving crap out the house she might be swayed and grateful for the extra space
