Greetings from Cambs.

Hi All,

Just joined up after buying our first little Honwave 3.8 to play with on the Nene & Ouse,... but after an engine upgrade (currently just 6hp) we'll probably take it to the coast too. Looking forward to picking all the experienced brains on here about literally EVERYTHING as there's no manuals included with the boat or engine. My wife and I are complete novices, so be gentle when I start asking something stooopid !
Roll on the warmer weather !!
Pete.

Welcome Pete.. only about 10mls south of you. We tend to go for days out at the coast as 1) it's more exciting and 2) the river licence is so damn expensive.

Ask away... there is plenty of Honwave experience on here. Is the Suzuki 2 or 4 stroke?

Yep we're waiting about another 6wks before we venture out.

Cheers,

David

Hi David, thanks for the welcome. I'm in Sawtry to be precise so probably pretty close to you. The Suzuki is 4 stroke.

Snap! So if you need advice you are only a walk away.

If we do use the river (you can get day licences but they need booking a few days in advance) we tend to launch at the Huntingdon riverside park, troll up to Godmanchester then back down to Hartford Mill eatery for lunch.

Hi,

I live not to far away in Bedfordshire but use my boat quite a bit from Aldeburgh on the coast, its a lovely place with plenty of safe cruising on the river Alde/Ore.

Its certainly exciting going in and out into the North Sea.

As a youngster I used to wild camp on the banks of the river but not sure its allowed now!

Hi Pete, welcome!

I'm new too, and just brought a T40 Honwave. I can't wait to get out on the water. I'm only in Essex and often go to St Ives in the summer. Maybe we could arrange a meet up and pick Fenlanders brain together 😃

How much are the river licences?

Cheers

Bit of a pain Cliff. For a year your outfit would be the staggering cost of £280 for Ouse & Nene! If you just had a 4hp OB that would reduce to £79 and for that reason we have a spare 4hp for the years we have registered for the river.

The alternative is a daily licence at £8.50 which oddly is for any HP. The nuisance with that it is for a given day so you have to notify a couple of days in advance. Fine as long as you trust the weather two days ahead.

In truth I find the river a little limiting so we tend to go to the trouble of whooshing down the M11 and over to Mersea Island.

I'm super busy with modernising a flat for my elderly parents which is also taking up all the spare garage space at the moment but I've promised Pete when that work is all done I'll get him round when I do the first inflate and checkover of the season.

David are those costs for the river & canal trust or the environment agency? I know the nene is a environment agency controlled river as I work on there a lot might be worth comparing rates.

Wow £280 is outrageous, plus slipway launching fees. I think the risk of £8.50 on bad weather is much more appealing.

We're about 40 mins from Mersea island, maybe we could arrange a meet up in the warmer months and you could show us around?

Yep we could do that Cliff, just need to get this project out of the way for my parents. I'll drop you a PM when we get the kit checked over and think about venturing out.

maybe of interest ,I pay £200 april to march at levington marina ,very steep launch but ok for 4x4 ,if not you can always use the cable which is a permaneant fixture , plenty of parking all included,, launch all states of tide into sheltered marina then to the orwell or don to Felixstowe dock ,then up the stour to maningtree or if you prefer out to sea and choose any number of other inlets ,
think its about the same out of Felixstowe ferry int the Deben
