TRANSPORTING - inflated on roofrack

Just purchased my first SIB. Quicksilver 310 airdeck with a yamaha 4hp 4stroke. I have been transporting the boat fully inflated on top of my van. I have a Kangoo with a large roofrack with roll bar. I've only taken her down the beach so far (about 1 mile from home) and the boats been fine on the roof. Does anyone else carry their boat inflated on the roof?? I plan to travel about ten miles on A roads but dont intend to go over 40mph. Do you think this will put to much strain / pressure on the boat??

any advice very much welcome

Well I was horrified to be following a Merc Estate with a small RIB strapped to the roof - at 80mph!!! Yes seriously - I dropped right back - bloke was a maniac!!!

i carried an 11foot zodiac on the roof of my old mk i escort van for years with no bother when i used to dive ,as long as you dont start driving silly speeds ,.the RNLI broads station carries a sib on their pickup truck not seen it only on their web page ,

80MPH!!!! Don’t think my van would reach that speed empty. Do you think a gentle 40mph max would be ok? Only single carriageway too

Nice one, I can relax. Thanks for the super quick responses. Its always best to be cautious with these things as a newbie. Last thing you want is to turn up for a river trip with your boat popped on the roof.

just be carefull what you use to strap or tie it down with as some rope is abrasive ,especially if its been in sand or grit ,webbings straps ok usually,

f you can get it so the nose is not overhanging the windscreen (probably not a problem on a van) you'll be more stable - there's a huge amount of air goes vertically up over the windscreen, if the bow overhangs it catches the updraft..... I've done 1000s of miles with a Laser upside down on the roof.

If you can't avoid it, tie the nose down to your front towing eye.

You wont have a problem,i used to put mine on the rack of the landie,it became a chore as i could not manage to get up there on my own,often travelled from holyhead to chester 70 odd miles with it on the roof towing a caravan speeds 45/55 mph without any problems,use ratchet straps 2 number,i can also tie the bow down over the front to the abar/towing eye

It is much simpler to get it onto the roof of a normal car!!

I mean something not 12' tall - I also have a 110 and the ladder ain't for show. The Disco is also too high for chucking a SIB on but a Rangie Classic is perfect as would be a new Sport.

We have carried an Achilles 10.4 foot on top of our Mini Cooper in Florida. I kept the speed below 35 mph as was posted. The 15 HP Yamaha was in the car.

I regularly travel 40 miles with my 3.3m SIB on the roof. I try to keep it below 50mph. Wooden rails extend the width of the car ones and allow the tubes to be better supported.
