Taking a SIB on holiday

We often visit Greek islands, and l was wondering if it would be possible to take a lightweight SIB on a plane.

More importantly, would airlines take a small outboard motor, such as a 12kg 2.5 hp?
It would be great to have the boat at the holiday resort, to use.

The motor could be drained of oil and fuel, and packed in a custom flight case.
We could even remove the engine leg and pack it next to the power head, to make it more compact.

I would just ring the airline and ask, they should give you a definitive answer.

Depending on where you are going, a courier may be easier and cheaper. We have started sending our ski gear by courier to Alps in winter, its cheaper and easier than paying airline charges.

The folded size of the sib will determine if this is an option, rather than the weight.

Some of my mates have taken their bikes with them on plane trips. They pay something like 50€ extra for the bike box (which weights about 20 to 25 kg).
Maybe if you could fit a tender or a dinghy into a luggage case, you could pay for the extra weight and get away with fit. But is it worth the effort?

Well, l would say yes, as we could use it every day.
As long as l could take the engine with it.
We recently stayed in Parga, Greece and it would have been great to have a boat there.

Your biggest challenge will be the engine rather than the boat in terms of safety regs, not just the weight and bulk etc. Personally I'd not want to rely on an engine that's been sent as accompanied bagage.

Fair easier to come to Scotland :o)

I think you're correct on that-any trace of petrol and it won't be allowed onboard a plane.

Ask the airline, if not mistaken airlines charge by volume not by weight regarding non personal lugagge. A friend wanted to import a medium rib from a Asian factory, the airline wanted to charge more than the cost of the boxed rib. Will need to drain all fuel leftovers from carb...

I personally would love to count with my current rib/engine combo while touring hundreds of Greek Islands.

Will more than likely need the tank and fuel system flushed of vapour and certified safe.
You'd need to check the IATA dangerous goods regs for petrol.

Sounds like too much trouble.

We went to Scotland with the boat last year, and the year before. It was great, l love Scotland.
Last year it was a heatwave there, the temperature reached 30deg on a couple of days.
