will

I didn't mean to be offensive about the 1k comment. Currently 1000 British pounds = $ 2126.89 CAN. The SIB market in Britain may be very different than in Canada, but here, any SIBs that sell new for under $ 2200 are extremely flimsy and use suspect fabric. This is why I believe you can get more bang for your buck if you can snag a higher end used one if it is in good condition.

I understand the accessability and storage isssues completely which is why I am a big SIB fan. There are alot of lakes (some very large ones) here in Manitoba that you can only access by foot or possibly with a 4x4 where there is absolutely no way to pull a boat trailer through. With a SIB you can attach launching wheels (sturdy ones) and pull it over short portage trails, or with longer portage trails (over a mile), fold it up and throw it on a hand-pull cart.

Furthermore a well built SIB is every bit as rugged as a quality RIB, of course it wont be nearly as comfortable in choppy conditions, but is capable nonetheless. Additionally, a well built SIB will be typically have a higher payload rating than a RIB of the same length.

My poor 30 year old hypalon zodiac mark I (11') finally gave up the ghost this summer after alot of abuse. The first 10 years as an RCMP boat, the last 20 from myself. Tough little boat but way too small for 2 people with gear to be anything close to comfortable

I have since ordered a Gemini Dive 470 (a bigger version of the surf 420 - which is basically a round nosed zapcat) made from Orca 866 fabric (1670 dtx hypalon) and I expect this boat will outlast me. I test drove one this summer and the the tunnel hull design on these boats give an amazing advantage in ride over the traditional inflatable V keel design. It won't be ready for a while yet. This boat will have room for an ATV and gear.

Last week I bought a 1982 Zodiac Grand Raid Mark II (13'9" 940 dtx hypalon) on ebay which apparently is in very good condition (hasn't arrived yet) for $ 925 CAN (+ $ 200 for shipping from Vancouver to Winnipeg). I should have posession of it later this week. I'll be using a 25 hp merc 2 stroke with it (same motor I used with the Mark I) which will fly with light loads.

I'm sure that you'll find the 15 hp will work great with a SIB under 14' if the loads are reasonably light. Good luck with your search & please post up what you come up with.

Exactly!

SIBS are kinda like a cork with power! Which is a huge part of their charm (but might not appeal to everyone).

What sort of speed could you expect from this? http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/SIM460/

Also, how well would this size of sib/engine cope with the solent?

Is it good value for money?

I rekon about 25-28 kts based on other sib speeds i have heard. I rekon it would cope with most conditions in the solent but it can get uncomfortable on longer trips if weather is bad.

As a guide my honda 3.8 with honda 20 did 18knts flat out with 3 people aboard , it would cruise easy at 15 all day on a sniff of fuel.

Infaltable floors seem to hit a wall and the honda felt like it would need lots more power to push it much faster .
Steering wasn't twitchy at all

I reckon the 25 mariner may be a better motor for a sib as its the same wieght as the 20 4 stroke but with more power and they us so little fuel its not really worth worrying about economy .

I think the beach rescue sibs use 30 hp

I reckon that's pretty good value if the engine is ok - they give it a 1yr guarantee so it should be fine.

As to speed I also think prob 26kts ish with a light load.

Will cope with the solent fine - you just have to keep the speed down in a chop.

I think that is well expensive , I nearly purchased exactly that combination as it was on offer brand new boat and engine for about £2500

The honda was only 2850 new for boat and engine the extra being the honda engine the boats were the same price within 50 quid if I remember .

If you buy one get the Bravo 12v high pressure pump with the pressure setting on , footpumping these things to the correct pressure is a long hard job,

Well the boiat itself is about £1000

http://www.marinedirect.co.uk/pages/...UICKSILVER.htm

So about £1100 isn't that expensive for the engine - is it???

Yes-that's the same price as you can buy an ex-contract 40 for if you look around.

£1100 for an ex contract engine is big money when a brand new one was £1600

as I said boat and engine deal for £2500

The 3.8 honda is about £900 quid and was in my opinoin the better boat so even more money could be saved there ,

Portavon boats in bristol had an alloy floor honda going cheap back in the summer and a 25 mariner that had an hours use really cheap due to a customer buying the wrong shaft length .

If you have the room the alloy floor is better but heavier , you need a transit van to move it all , and then a bigger engine so it kind of defeats the object .

The inflatable floor will easily go on a rooftop

Apart from boats and outboards / ebay wheres good to look for sibs? Anyone got web sites of places selling sibs at good prices.

Looking like i'll have £2500 max to spend on it and want a decent motor with it.

Something like this http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/SIM460/ would be ideal. Like the idea of it being heavy duty with the wear patches on the tubes and has a good size engine. Really need something with a bit of 'get up and go' in it!

I wouldn't-that 40 4stroke will be somewhat heavy and underpowered compared with most Sr4's. Cheap if you can get it for 2.5k though-might be worth trading the 4stroke for a 2stroke.

I agree the ideal lump is probably a 60HP 2stroke Yam, but being a poor student an economical 4stroker appeals to me. My 70HP Tohatsu drinks like George Best when you give it some beans.
