Other thing to remember about D&G area is there are lots of flat sandy beaches, which are great for sibs, but your short carry to the water's edge at high tide may become a half mile walk 3 hrs later. Sandhead being a prime example...
It's 100miles from Gretna to Stranraer. Usually manage it in 2 1/2 hours towing. Can sometimes get stuck behind trucks if ferry due but generally trucks want to pass you unless Smokey Bear is on the lookout.

Thanks everyone for the great info.
Have narrowed it down even further, and more or less decided on loch lomond.
In particular ardlui hotel and campsite, has anyone stayed here and if so, could you let me know if you need any permits to sib on the lochs, speed limits etc.
I do have boat insurance and will be taking either a tohatsu 18hp or mariner 25hp.
Many thanks....AGAIN

Yes you will need to register the boat. Don't think you can do it at ardlui, so either do it by post or stop at balloch rangers office on the way up. It's free (but you'll need to pay postage and for numbers etc) . You'll get the bylaws at that time (or online from the national park website).

That's interesting - we have that term too. Here it means second generation (settled) Travellers (Pikeys). Scum of the planet.

Hi

well if loch lomond it is I am sure we will see you. Just look for a shetland 610 with a shiny 90hp Honda on it and a big fat bloke grinning a lot as that will be me!

Here's a trick from someone who has worked in amongst those darn midges, a bottle of Avon Skin So Soft, did me well and no hazardous chemicals on the skin, however my o/h advises me that Avon have changed the recepie so can't guarantee it's potency any more.

Why is it everything that works seems to get banned or "improved"?

Remember "Shoo"? - it even smelt like it should come with a COSHH datasheet before you opened the bottle!

Remember Shoo very well, a bottle leaked in a plastic tray in my car and melted the plastic, kept the midges away though.

Just back from a superb first trip to Scotalnd with my recently aquired sib, went to Loch Lomond first and launched at Rosses Priory (BIL in member of sailing club), had a great day mooching round islands etc

pic on Lomond

Then went onto North Ladaig and it was too rough to launch and not overly interesting looking to me, site was great though.

Then went to Mull and stayed at Fidden Farm which was SIB heaven IMHO, highly recommend it, pic of me prior to launch

I really loved it here, need your wits about you more here (tidal stream, rocks galore) but if you are careful you could have a great time. I did not venture far in my wee sib as its new to me and has yet to gain my trust!

[QUOTE=Polwart;451767]
However more seriously, midges generally get worse the further north and west you go. Even then they are only usually troublesome from June to August.

Well said ... Although if you want somewhere in the very North of Scotland with pretty much no midge problem at any time of year, come to Orkney. It's largely due the general lack of trees and heather... Although parts of Hoy can have their moments, although nothing like the West coast.

That said, once you get as far as Loch Lomond, you are about half way here from Stockport

PS ... From a professional point of view, great to see such a good and accurate description of the access rights in Scotland Polwart.

Cheers

Steve

I loved Scotland and will likely get a bigger better SIB for my next trip, got a taste for the Islands now.

Can see how you would easily spend a few days on Loch Lomond, loads of cool wee Islands to invade!
