SIB/River Use- Knife Recommendation

Hi All,

As the title suggests, I am looking for a knife for mainly SIB and river use.

I know there are many posts around knives around here but most of them are general.

Feel free to tell me if I don't need one, but if I do, can you recommend one, along with a UK web link (if possible)?

I carry a gerber multi tool on the rib. Comes in handy.

And yes, you certainly need a knife on a boat.

Thanks Vinny. Have a multi tool (not Gerber) and found them too fiddly. Prefer to have dedicated tools but that maybe just me.

Have both - they do different jobs.

Keep the multitool close and the knife even closer. The multitool may save your day but the knife may save your life...

I’m still feeling my way into this ribbing lark, fully intend to have a knife mounted on or near the helm for emergency purposes. [emoji106] the example linked above may well be what I need.

I have a Swiss Army Victorinox Skipper - difficult to get at a reasonable price now though. The bottle opener and corkscrew come in handy too.

£16 my order was £50+ by the time I added some new dry bags and a couple of other bits...... I plan to keep it on my buoyancy aid so have it to hand thinking about it should have ordered 2 oh well...

This is the knife I use and like but wouldn't particularly advise for a SIB as you have to be very disciplined which way the sharp end is pointing! Always in the PFD pocket on a lanyard attached to a loop so it can't be fumbled overboard by mistake.

The backup (say should I go overboard taking mine with me and the remaining crew need one) similar to Jeff's is a shortish serrated steak knife with the end rounded off and the handle drilled for a lanyard.

I have a similar one (also from Trident), but with the hooked end. It's primarily for rescuing other people trapped in sailing dinghies, but might be useful for sorting myself out as well. Mostly, it just gets used around the boat park, and has no trouble with our 3/4" anchor rope or the 4 or 5 mm dyneema it was used on once last year.

It's velcroed under a sort of epaulette thing* on my left shoulder, where I can get it with either hand. A small loop of rope through a split D-ring on the buoyancy aid would — I hope — help to stop it disappearing if ever I accidentally disembark at speed.

I can open it with one hand in gloves, but not quickly. Palm make a knife that has a pull-tab you can bite to help open it: Palm Folding Knife
I might make something similar for mine.

There's also one in the toolkit on the boat, although I'd rather it was more accessible than that (in a sheath on the helm, for instance).
