Short Shaft/Long Shaft

I am still looking for that 15 hp 2 stroke tiller outboard and I have tracked a few down. On my 3.2 m sib however the height from the top of the transom to the bottom of the transom is exactly 15 inches. This would suggest that I need a short or standard shaft motor. You guessed it all the ones I am finding are long shaft and also at the right price as far as I am concerned.

So would it be a complete no no to put a long shaft on this SIB

Are you trying to get a keen deal nearer £500 than £1000? Nothing wrong in that but would make it harder. But the deals are about. Max linked on a few weeks ago where as far as I can remember a SIB with Tohatsu 9.8 sold for around £750. On the right day the OB was worth £150 more than that.

Yes I am after a deal as I already have far too many boats and this will be used but not loads


What about if you use a piece of ply to raise the transom top by say 2 inches and in effect split the difference with a long shaft

Horrible compromise!

With something like an old clinker displacement launch that sits nicely in the water I've seen it work OK.

But a small light SIB.... if you leave the longshaft dangling all the way in is causes drag and raises the bow under power. If you raise it up to put the cav plate in the right place it will look daft and be top heavy. If you do it half way it will have both issues to a degree.

Just my opinion...

Trust me the moment you buy a longshaft in desperation the ideal shortshaft will come up a week later!

What about a brief buy and spilt project. Like this that sold a couple of weeks ago... Rover R3.40 boat and suzuki outboard motor

Sell the boat off and end up with a 15hp 2-stroke for under £400.

Over the years I've seen some amazing bargains where small river boats are sold on Ebay very badly listed but with decent 10-15hp motors and they sell for less than the OBs would alone.

totally agree with fenlander the only time i would use a long in a short shaft application is for a tender at displacement speed

I used to run a long shaft 15 hp on a 3.8 wooden floor sib, engine was definitely too long for the transom but still never had any performance problems in fact is ran perfectly and planned nicely with 3up and gear !

Yes agree CoG will be lifted with weight shifted up , the jack plate appears to be a work around for those who do not have a choice. It is always better to match your gear to the situation. In this case I would wait it out for the short shaft . My case I did not have a choice and will let you know how this jack plate works out.

You used to be able to buy the yam inflatables with a long shaft transom my pal had a 3.8m with a long shaft transom and it was fine I doubt the c of g makes a whole lot of difference
