Serial number and model number Connundrum!!

How do I find the serial number on my Yamaha 20hp 96 2 stroke outboard? I think I may have brought the wrong spark plugs for it and in trying to work out the model number I started looking for the serial number too. I found two seperate stickers on the bracket, one says,
"20 cm, 6a9 s 021474w" and the other says,
"1996,6a9-81" and then the power in kw and the weight.
It's already got BR7HS NGKs in but when I looked at the NGK site it asks for model number and I can't work it out. I have some NGK BR7HS-10 plugs but the gap is different to the BR7HS according to NGK. Can I use either does anyone know?

ps, I know I'm posting tonnes of threads but there's soooo many things I want to know and this site is so brilliant!!

Ok,
I found a small sticker recommending the correct plugs so that's sorted. Now I'm really determined to find the model number. The serial number matched no format I can find on the internet even though it's on a Yamaha factory sticker.
I found this site, but my numbers don't fit. Any ideas?

Try this site and see if they have anything that matches. If not give them a call, they are very very helpful and provided bits for my engine with no trouble whatsoever.

20MLHU or 20MSHU; looks like the only 20's made in 96. I assume it's long or short on the 2 model numbers.

http://www.simyamaha.com/category_s/29.htm

shows the 96 2 stroke models.

http://www.simyamaha.com/category_s/1803.htm

is a "how to find model number" page.

Thanks Jyasaki,
It's got me a step closer but my serial number/model number doesn't match the format of those described. I'm definitely looking in the right spot too, on the Port side of the engine bracket.
The sticker says,
YAMAHA 20CM
6A9 S 021474
W

It's in exactly this order. If the W denotes year, then this engine is both a 1998 and a 1996????????

Well, the 96 I referred to was from your post. So let's drop that and go from fresh:

20CM is the model; 20 hp, C denotes tiller steering, and the M denotes manual start.

6A9 is the model number Prefix, which as far as I know doesn't mean anything.

S denotes short shaft (should be 15" from the saddle of the bracket to the anti-ventilation plate if you measure it),

The 6 digits are your serial number,

the W indicates a 1998 manufacturing date. Which makes no sense, as, as far as I can tell, there wasn't a 20 made in 1998.

So, based on the other sticker, and the no-20hp-in-98 info, I'd go with 96 and chalk it up to screwy codes back then. I'd also put in a call to a Yam service shop, and enlist their help in figuring everything out, because I'm apparently worthless at this stuff...

Thanks for that Mate, it's another step closer and much appreciated. I've had a message from another member who used to have these at his place of work and thinks he may have a manual so I'll let you know what the findings are.
It is weird how the sticker says '96 and the serial denoted 98.
Thanks for the help it is appreciated.

I have a ProV 100, made in 98, which just isn't sold in the USA. Very annoying,as you Americans have all the best parts web sites...

Makes us even, as whenever I search for RIB related stuff, I get UK sites.
