Rivers?

Can anyone tell me what the rules are regarding putting the SIB in and using rivers, particularly the Severn and or Warwickshire Avon?

I'd like to get the new boat wet on the river this year before the weather closes in and also to check out how it handles etc before I start using it in anger in the sea next year.

I know that there's a public slipway at Evesham (see link) but I'm not sure what permits I'd need to be able to use it - anyone know? We used to put in here in the 1970's and potter off down to Fladbury weir without anything but I expect the rules are a bit more strict these days.

You will need insurance to obtain a licence on the Severn and Avon, I usually go on the Severn from lower lode or from the bank opposite with a good run down and a few pub stops if they are open, never been stopped and asked for licence though

If so, looks a great place to put in and tour down, as you say, past a number of nice country pubs - I bet there'd be some choice coarse fishing down that stretch too.

Yep that's the place, good pub with excellent Sunday carvery, you can launch across the river off the bank if you can carry your sib or wheel it, a little dirty bit not too bad, the pub charges for using its slip

Is this the place across from the pub?

I have launching wheels so if that's the place it looks very doable.

I looked into this a while back as this is my old stomping ground from 11-19yrs old and we still have loads of family in the area. Thinking of an old times sake trip on the river. The charges are about £100 yearly or a reasonable £5-£10 a day for occasional use... not quite sure how the admin of that would work and if is for a fixed/flexible day.

That linked slipway view in Evesham is so familiar as we were always mucking about the riverside park... and when being more sensible in the single sculls or fours rowing for the school from the boathouse. Also had a clinker boat about 13ft with an old 1000cc marinised car engine which dad would launch for us from Hampton ferry slip... wonder if that's all still the same down there?

Do you mean what we used to refer to as "Huxley's"? Still looks like the picture - was there about a month ago with the grandkids and the dog etc.

Have spent many a happy hour down here over the years. Was fishing out of an old Puffin Dinghy on a British Seagull 2 (who remembers them?) just down from there on the far bank many many years ago when a huge horse appeared at the top of the bank and tried to step into the boat - would have gone straight through the bottom ha ha!

Yep that's the place we used to launch the old motorboat.... not been down there for years but doesn't look to have changed much.... great picture.

What was the earliest era were you about there?

The picture you posted is of the boys college rowing site next to the public bank, I imagine you could get away with using the concrete ramp if no one around and gate unlocked

Started going there with my parents (fishing mainly) back in the early 70's at a guess. We used to be go there most summers and my father was often in some of the fishing contests that used to be held right way round to the town waters.

Ah I see - might pop down and see who's there and ask them if I could use it - seems like a decent ramp.

Two years ago I went from Tewkesbury to Stratford in my Honwave with a 15hp

A good trip but the river gets repetitive and not too many pub stops, still a good challenge and glad I did it.

Locks are good fun but you'll need a handle!!

Hi is easily done in a long day although a few fist waves from fishermen lurking in the trees

My theory was more speed less wake I don't think they agreed.

I broke in up into two days partly because it's a long time sat sideways on a sib and if the locks go against you on the it can slow you up.

Day 1 - Tewkesbury to Evesham
Day 2 - Evesham to Stratford
Not covered over consecutive days

It took careful planning with two cars dumping one at the destination.

I have done the top end of the Thames Lechlade - half a day down and back and this is very relaxed.

Also done Marlow - Windsor, very funny in a 3.8m SIB in the locks with the big river cruisers.

Yes I have done Lechlade like you for a day and it's relaxed, and want to try camping and trying to get to Teddington for a decent trip in the next few years
