Power Boat Level 2 For France

I had no replies to my previous question,(boating in France), but after been told i would probably need to do a level 2 power boat course, inland waterways certificate (CEVNI) and a ICC just to take a 3.4m airdeck with a 15hp outboard on a lake in france. I booked myself in only to find out from the french boat police that all i need is boat docs, driving licence and insurance to gain a permit. Useful info as i was about to spend £300+ for the course.

The PB2 (which will allow you to apply for your ICC) is still (IMHO) a very useful starting point and should reduce your insurance a little ...

Strangely you would need a permit to take it out on the sea

Why would the French government require boaters to have a British training certificate?

They wouldn't, but if you do your pb2 in the UK you can also be issued with a International certificate of competence, which the French will acknowledge!

The ICC (International Certificate of Competence) is a European qualification recognised across the EU. IN the UK its managed by the MCA who in return have handed over the admin and licensing to the RYA. I belive in different countries it is administered differently.

Here in the UK a RYA Powerboat Level 2 (our National Powerboat Certificate) can be converted to a ICC (power up to 10m) by rubber stamping process.

So would I be entitled to some kind of rubber stamped UK certificate based on my french permit?

I don't think so - why would you want that ?

The French permit will presumably allow you to apply for an ICC (if you ever wanted to) which is recognised across Europe.

Getting your British permit (the RYA powerboat level 2) doesn't qualify you to get a French permit - just the European equivalent (the ICC) ...
