RIBase
Had a 25 on a 3.83m Yam.

Great fun, pretty quick and just about safe on your own on a flat lake, any sort of wind or chop and a crew was a must.

Carrying the engine further than the garage to the car was a pig but with two people a doddle.

Jst be careful with the insurance - if you go over the boats reccomended it may just invalidate it?

You're not required insurance in Canada, it however does not mean you can do whatever....

Have you clocked your boat's speed?
Can 15hp on 3.3m can go 25mph with only 1 peson (170lb)?
What 25hp speed can be achieved?

I have a 4.2m Zodiac Futura Airdeck with a 25hp Mercury 2-stroke. Clocked last weekend on my GPS (very accurate) at 31mph (50km/h) with just me (190lbs) and the gas tank. Dropped to 27mph (43km/h) with my 125lb dog in the front. This is on fairly calm lake water. Some small chop and wave action. Nothing over 10 cm.

On a Bombard aerotec 3.8m (only 45kg's!!!) recommended 15hp-max 25hp . i got 23mph with a 15hp 2stroke merc by myself- got board of that and got a 30hp Tohatsu 2stroke ( 52kgs) - got about 30mph with 2 adults- and 36mph by myself. It could be a bit of a handfull with a bit of a chop. The main thing when its choppy is to trim the engine in and use good throttle control to keep the nose down- never flipped it end over(and believe me, i used to hammer it by myself even in chop), but did capsize once by turning too sharp on flat calm sea

To move the engine about I used to use a sack barrow with pneumatic 8inch wheels, modified with a block of 4+2 to mount the engine on. I could pull that up a steep shingle beach by myself, i will admit that i was puffing well by the end though!!

15hp and 30-35kg or 25hp and 45-50kg. Even prices are about the same!

Man, I can't decide!

Help me please!

Just got 2 deals going and can't decide what to take:

1. 1989 Johnson 15hp, 32kg for 800 CAD (500 pounds)
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehi...AdIdZ144000216

2. 1983 Mercury 20hp with electrostart, 45kg 500 CAD (300 pounds)

As advertised, both 2 stroke, look and run well, judging from photos.

What motor would you chose for QS 330 airdeck?

The 15hp probs due to it been a good chunk lighter, it would be fun with a larger engine but a 15hp can be carried fairly easy on your own.

I'm leaning towards 15hp, I'd say I'm almost set for it.

The resons against 20hp are, it is heavier, more bulky and for about same price you can get 25hp version, that weights the same.

Yesterday I've set myself for 1989 15hp Johnson, for the reasons that it is just lighter and more compact, easier to move around than 2hp Merc. This should make me use boat more often.
I paid for the motor only 660 CAD (~420 B.pounds) which I think is a good deal, it came with a hose and 6gal plastic tank. The owner put brand new power pack on it few days ago. The motor run and started OK. However one think, the power kill button does not work. To kill the motor you have to choke it or disconnect the fuel hose. Choking actually worked well.
I've other Internet resources and some suggest it is either actual kill button that's not functioning or there could be lost/bad ground. I've checked the ground and reattached it, but I have no barrel to test run, so I have to wait until next weekend when I go to the lake.
Any other ideas as why the button not working?
Does it somehow affects the motor power (it is incorporated into the power pack)?

Good decision-the merc 200 only puts out about 15-18hp at the prop and weighs a load more.

My thoughts exactly, to heavy for 5hp power increase. Not worth it.

I'm also looking for the 25hp Force motor. Supposevly it is the lightest recent 25hp ever made, short shaft tiller weights only 42kg.
They are hard to come by, but they are also cheap.

update:

Had to carry my 15hp Johnson (32-34kg) a little bit further than usual, with the stairs down and waving zig-zag pattern...that felt kind of heavy once I gout to the dock...and there is a need to carry that back with the stairs going up.....at the end I felt exhausted. i can't see myself doing this with the 25hp Mercury (50kg) in a reasonably fast manner.
I feel kind of happy with choosing a lighter motor.
