Planing with an f-rib

Hi. Looking for some advice please. I currently have a 4m aluminium floor honwave with a 15hp 4 stroke. Weighs about 140kg all in. Use it for Scottish West coast, islands etc. It's great but the usual problem of it being a pain pulling up beaches - i have to take engine off every time and so on.

I'm looking at getting the folding rib 360 (48kg) with a 6hp 4 stroke (25kg) so that I have that as an option when I'm staying close to shore with less people/smaller loads. I can also get it in boot of car no bother.

My question is do you think the 6hp would plane the folding rib with 2 adults and some minimal camping stuff? I don't want to get a bigger engine because the weight seems to jump quite a bit when they go 8hp+
Thanks very much

I'd ask the Gurnard - he's just up-rated the engine on his F-rib from 3.5 to a 6HP Yam. He's posted some great threads in the Rib Gallery about his boat & forays.

Hi duggie..thats an easy question to answer..and F-Ribs are very efficient boats..but there is no way a 6hp will plane the larger F-Rib..two up and camping gear...you will need to look at a 10 or possibly a 15 to make sure

My F-Rib 2.75 which is a good bit lighter ..and easily planes with just me and my gear...with a 6HP. I doubt it would plane two up ..but I have not tried

Soon as you go two cylinder you nearly double engine weight but you need the extra hp so it's a catch 22 plane or not to plane? But you will still save around 50 kg less than your current rig.

Cheers

It's true - still a good bit lighter than the honwave

Found a place in the channel islands that suggest they can sell a new 9.8 tohatsu 2 stroke - 26kg. I've emailed them to ask how I can buy one

Thanks guys

Big money though!

Look at the Suzuki 9.9 38kg twin cylinder with a big foot option for heavy loads £1650 better on fuel so you can save on weight by not having to carry extra fuel plus 5 year warranty you will only get a year with the two smoke I would think and it's in the channel isles pain if it breaks OMO.

Cheers

Planing with an f-rib

A cheeky new 9.8 from Mainbrayce is a good choice.
Or a nearly new secondhand one here might be good if price is negotiable.

These little motors rock....26 kilos and run as sweet as a sewing machine.

Don't rule out the Merc/Mariner 15hp 2 stroke - speaking personally my favourite SIB engine and the lightest 15 at 36kg. £1100/1200 will get you a nice one and looked after you should never lose money on it.

39kg against 26kg? That's 18 litres of petrol! He can't burn that in a day on the water...

You've got him on the warranty though. Although there's not much on one to go wrong.

I got one of these 9.8 from this guy, he gets them set over from Poland I think, went to his place it was like 2 smoke heaven, as everyone seems to agree it's a great motor

Working on water at 10lb per gallon it's about 2.5 gallon 11 litres it's only an off set and barely noticeable but it's there and adds up when you start loading especially when your pushing it on HP.£100 cheaper on two smoke though new.

Big mistake IMO - I'd stick with petrol for the OBMs. It's more expensive but much lighter - almost 30% lighter. You forgot to factor in the sump oil on the 4 stroke too. BTW, It's Poly's evening off and I'm minding the slide rule...

At your age you'll have to weigh it more frequently :-P

Anyway - I checked Poly's notebook and it says that petrol has a range of weights, from around 710g-740g/L, depending on the level of aromatics in it. He's mustard is that lad

Thanks Jeff and everyone else

I wouldn't bother getting a 38kg engine as my current 15hp is 44kg - 6kg isn't enough of a saving to justify

However dropping to 26kg is a big decrease

I had been under the impression that it was pretty much impossible to get a new 2 stroke and I'm delighted to find out that I was wrong !
