Replace them if they're out of date. I tried to set off 2 red hand flares and 2 orange smoke flares last year in the garden during bonfire night. All 4 failed. No use in an emergency when your life or someone else's depends on it.

What would you rather carry in your car to be disposed properly !! A complete intact flare thats out of date or going out of date, or a flare you activated and it failed ?
Is it honestly worth it.
The usual IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME syndrome

It is certainly not sterile to start with though.

No, plastic leachate is the least of the problems - food grade plastics really shouldn't be leaching much into pure water at room/fridge temp. Bacteria are the problem - and as well as some bacteria having health issues others will lead to bad taste.

If you think bottled water is bad - you should see what's growing in most office water coolers.

I missed the thread - I assumed from the title that we were discussing "out of date flares" (for clarification: time expired pyrotechnics - rather than Willk's wardrobe issues) - which seemed logical as it must be at least six months since the topic was last discussed. Indeed, if you like, the old threads were "out of date".

Found this in my old (2nd rev. 1991) Day Skipper course notes book. Be interesting to see what is in their current publications:

A neighbour of mine had a very similar dilemma a few weeks ago with a slab of Strongbow* he'd stashed away and forgotten about. He discovered his little hidden treasure trove on Friday 31st May, which coincidentally, was it's 'Use by' date. After putting in a good shift, we managed to dispose of it before pumpkin o'clock. Twas a close run thing, mind.

*Proper 'old skool' electric lemonade it was too: 5.3% ABV , not the 4.8% stuff you get nowadays.

Arrrr - you'll come round to my way of thinking yet.

I did the rounds of the "orchard" yesterday - counting my apples before they've ripened, so to speak. A bit of work but you can dial in any ABV you want and there's no sell by date to worry about

Talking of expiry dates I've still got an unopened bottle of Orangina bought on the old second year cross channel day trip to France, that would make it about 1979.

Probably more dangerous than one of the OP's dodgy flares...which is probably what we were wearing in '79...

Never thought we were in dispute!

Look after those precious little bundles - make sure your gran doesn't have any silly plans to turn them into pies, chutney and other such nonsense.

We found an unopened flaggon of Buckleys Brown Ale in my old man's shed a few decades ago - the wisdom within the family at the time reckoned its vintage was 1968(ish). I think it's still in there.

This is getting like the 'Who's got the oldest Searider?' thread.
