need some expert advice

hi
on starting my mariner 4 hp 2 stroke for the first time this year i ran engine in wheely bin? ,, however there was some fumes ,and the next morning the water level in bin was very oily around rim ,,-not to much in water,, can i assume this is normal for first time in 6 months and it was just the exhaust fumes that caused this ,, i checked oil level witha cable tie ,and the oil seemed ok ,and nice and clean , oil around wheely bin ,just made me panic .. hopefully some of you guys ,will put my mind at rest . thanks in advance for any reply,s that may be forthcoming

p.s. oil fumes were burning off after 10-15 minutes of engine running

Sounds fairly normal to me.
Me 2st smokes alot first start any time as its generally been ideling up a river at 5knts. :-)

In 6 months idle, all kinds of stuff can happen: oil leaking past rings is the most likely culprit in your case (at least as far as I know.)

Watch the temp carefully for the first 5 or so minutes, and take your baseline of operation then. Things will have settled back down in the first couple of minutes, I'd assume.

I would have thought oil in the water is perfectly normal (for a 2 stroke), there will always be some unburnt oil being sent out with the exhaust gas. I have always noticed the same thing myself when running my small engines in tubs. I would expect it to be worse if the engine has sat around for a while as the petrol will evaporate increasing the oil to petrol ratio in the carb.

I would add I am no expert - these are just my own observations and theories!

it was serviced when i got it -aug-sept ,and i only ran for maybe 30 min ..

Oops, sorry misread the engine spec; thought it said 4-stroke.

Normal for a 2-stroke.

just to say when it was put to bed last year i ran the carb dry and emptied fuel tank when i ran yesterday it was fresh fuel-50-1 as advised .. hope that throws some light on problem

Hi

if it has been serviced and based on what else you have done it does sound normal (for a 2 stroke which should not have been banned as I have shares in a few oil companies!) and so have fun and use it!. All 2 strokes smoke a bit and I even like the smell.

reading ,reply,s you have taken a bit of pressure off me , engine runs great ,i was just concerned when i seen the rim of oil round the wheelie bin the next day , thanks ,all for your input ,, i am on website every day trying to learn,, my phylosophy/ is -never be ashamed to show your ignorance when there is opportunity to gain knowledge

check your gear box isn`t leaking .. are you using last years fuel or new.. and 2`s do smoke ..i`ve been told to use 50.1 even if its a 100.1 though more oil ,means smoke

i,m using new fuel and 50-1 as advised couldnt get filler plug loose , but i got the top one loose ,inserted a little bit of string and seems to be full with nice clean oil , but will get it checked properly a.s.p., thanks for your interest.
