My new SIB

Well, I picked up my 'new' SIB yesterday, an ex-RNLI Y boat.

Overall the condition is very good, just needs a bit of a clean and some TLC.

I'm not sure what to do about the square patches that have been put over the logos and numbers on the sponsons and bow dodger:

1. Leave them as they are. They don't appear to be very tightly attached.
2. Remove and replace with patches that are shaped better (eg rounded ends to match the shape of the underlying orange patch).
3. Remove and clean up underneath with Rib Revive / TFR / sticker remover as per this thread:

http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?...t=glue+removal

Only really an option if there is no trace of the logos / numbers.

Other than that, just looking forward to summer

Cheers

Chris

What a great boat - I want one !

Can you wait till they fall off ( as they are not brillianlty attached ) and then put full patches on the match the underlying orange ?

Either that or make a posative effort to remove & replace . Has to be all or nothing for me ?

That looks a lovely boat. I think I'd be inclined to leave well alone. Just by using the boat you'll probably meet people who will have done repairs like you want.
If you live anywhere near Wroxham, Steven at Fineway Leisure is absolutely brilliant at patches/ mods, etc.

Happy Sibbing!

Leave it as it is.........

.........as in my experience the removal of work already done only makes the job look a whole lot worse and despite best efforts and as much elbow grease as you might muster, the glue, sun fadng and outline of the patches will nbever really go away leaving you with a tatty looking vessel.

If it were me, be proud of what she is and was and when qquestioned you'll have good reason to advise of her history otherwise you'll spend all your time making excuses for her shabiness and not her strong history.

Take her for what she is and enjoy her for the same. She looks vernerable.

Hi Chris,

Nice boat, well done.

We refurbished a Y Boat for a customer this autumn: I would leave the patches in place.

Merry Christmas all!

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Really looking forward to getting her on the water - driving past Langstone Harbour Christmas Eve I nearly turned around to fetch the boat, but as we were on the way to the in-laws this might not have been popular .

I'm going to leave the patches as they are for now and see how it goes.

First challenge now then is sorting out some form of transom wheels or equivalent - problem is there is only 470mm between the elephant trunks, so I am not sure what will fit without clashing with the outboard. Maybe easily removable wheels that I can stow up forward under the bow dodger will be best.

Cheers

Chris

congrats chris, i would leave the patches on mine have been on for over 2 years and apart from the odd corner lifting they are fine ,at least your boat came with a decent anchor box mine came with the crappy blue plastic type ,did you get the boats service records with her ,if you look find out which lifeboat station she was at you can usually get some photos of her in action.all you need now is a geko helmet and dry suit in the next sale ,next time i might go for an old tyne class just need another £50,000

Thanks Mart,

Unfortunately I didn't get any service records with the boat. The operational number is Y-118, which I think means the boat belonged to St Peter Port's Severn 'Spirit of Guernsey'.

St Peter Port don't seem to have a website, so haven't found any more info yet. I'll have to do a bit more digging after the holidays.

Cheers

Chris

Thanks Pete. Those are the only two photos I have been able to find so far - They seem a bit camera shy down in Guernsey .

Cheers

Very solid looking boat. Looks like it will have no problem withstanding many more years of intensive use.
