My First Post & SIB!

Hi all,
Just saying "hi" as I've taken the plunge and bought a Quicksilver 340 Airdeck at the weekend.... and am excited already. I've a promise on a Suzuki 4 stroke 15hp engine too, so am chuffed.
So many thanks for the advice on this forum which was very helpful in buying the boat...and prepare yourselves for a few more questions!
:-)

Welcome...and you're welcome

I wouldn't normally p**s on anything under 7m and 200hp if it was on fire but many on here would and they know exactly where to aim so you're in safe hands.

ps. For those with no sense of humour, the above is an example of mine. I actually don't care if yours is an ex-bath tub, if it's floats, you're in my club
Apart from jetskis, obviously...

Hello and welcome. Ignore Martini's dissing on jet skis; they're the future of ribbing. His RIB is so fat it needs two engines. Get your SIB on a trailer and come to the Channel Islands. We're very boat friendly and the petrol and beer are cheap. Here's a picture of my boat after my OAP father ran it aground at the Minquiers Reef. Show us a picture of your's.

Oi, would you mind changing that down to at least 6.5m, or I reckon you ought to start sleeping on board Martini with one eye open

I thought he was sleeping on it already as it seems permanently moored at La Collette. Have you got a winter berth Matt?

Excellent news on that front, as of 1st dec I'll be joining the ranks of the elite - got a permanent berth in La Collette

Although she'll be back on the trailer for winter just as soon as the new gearbox for my rangerover arrives

I'll make an exception, I did have one once. Actually it was 6.7m but what's 8" among friends

I don't know..... perhaps you'd better ask your bumchum mate with the Aquastar

I see you've given up on multi-quoting. Keeps the post numbers up I suppose.

Anyway, to get back to ferryden's post - I had a Quicksilver Airdeck 270 some years back with a Mariner 5 and it was alot of fun, so I guess a 340 with 3 times as much power would be good for a laugh. I did occasionally use it on the water as well (not just in the garden) before you ask

Blimey, and I thought I was the one who liked shallow water ribbing.

Matt, when you're not on your new, gold-plated, paid-for-by-the-mafia berth can we lesser mortals use it?

You kept that very quiet when I was asking for advice! How did it go with the 5hp?

They are a barrel of laughs with 9.8hp on

For getting out to the mooring? One for each foot could be fun I spose

Technically, no
Only the registered vessel is supposed to be on the berth. But the powers that be can allow other boats if prior (couple of days) permission is sought which kind of rules out just popping on there for a few hours in waiting for the tide. Personally I have no problem with people using it if they check with me first but at your own risk, they could charge you the daily rate, £19 per day or part thereof for Archangel if I'm right?

Yes, that's right: £19. I wonder how far my boat would get on £19 worth of unleaded? About half way to Guernsey by my reckoning.

WOW!... never expected that load of replies! LOL!

You're a lively bunch in here aren't you (though I expect there's not a lot of you out on the water on a cold Monday night!)

OK first question!: Having bought an airdeck, how would I go about fixing in a seat at some point?

Secondly, I plan to ship my kit out to Mallorca this summer, has anyone any advice on best way to ship to Spain (I'm thinking about packing/care needed for the Suzuki)?

Gracias!

Sorry, don't often look in the Sibs section so didn't see your post. Used to get 12kts fairly easy by sitting at the front and reaching back to the tiller to keep the weight balance good. I got it an auction with the motor and really only bought it for the engine to use as an aux on my last rib.

Reckon we'll be heading in that direction more often as of next year.
I have heard "from within" the Big House, duty free fuel is about to run dry and it's a done deal already

Ferryden: Don't worry about the thread hijacks, you'll get used to it!

If you're "Shipping" it then you're looking at palletised which will cost you around £200+ (Speedshift)
Will you need a license to use an engine of that size out there?

Hi from Spain. I'm afraid it's mandatory. I do not know whether an UK license can be used (I believe skipper certificates are cheaper and easier to get in UK), plus taxes for the boat and maybe more papers. Huge business round that in here.
I bet 90% moored (by my cove) boats that size do not have a single paper - though nautic fines have 3 zeros in here...
There is a projected law (expected 2011-2012) to make easier and cheaper boat licensing, just because of those behaviours. Once the law is approved, I am almost sure fines will be more usual.

Many thanks guys.

We'll be mainly firing round the bay of Pollensa in Mallorca where the rules are you don't need a license for less than 13 kW of power, so could get away with it...but I'm going to get myself on an ICC compliant powerboating course (and do the small ship registration to I think) just in case. Really exciting!

Thanks again guys!
