Haven't got it yet but can't wait - Honwave T40AE

Getting a loan of a few different engines 2.5hp Seagull with clutch, 9.9hp Yamaha (few years old) just till I can scrape up the dough for something better

Quick Question to 2.5hp users - (we know it's not warp factor 7) Will this size engine push the Honwave comfortably on canals/rivers? and what pace could you expect?

9.9hp - what kinda ummph can I expect from this baby

I'd say about 4knts with the 2.5 depending on tidal/river flow, and 15+ with the 9.9 and a light load.

The T40 is my starter boat - I would aspire to maybe a 5m hypalon sib in the future - Ribs are beyond my financial reach and I also don't have the room for that set up so it's Sibs for now

Would have thought a little better from the 2.5 but beggars can't be choosers - 15+ sounds good from the 9.9 - The boat should arrive mid next week so I'll test them out at the weekend - any recommendations engine wise for the t40 ?

If possible and budget allows go for max engine stated at transom's tech plate. Just inflate well all air chambers and keel to perform better.

Congratulations on the boat. The 9.9 would probably be a minimum for that size, the 2.5 will pootle on a canal no problem. I would look for a minimum 15hp 2 stroke for 'proper' use but a 25 would maybe do it more justice given the capacity.

I have a t38 air deck with a 15hp 2 stroke. The 15hp is great as you can carry it around whilst having some performance. .....obviously not at the same time though.

I just bought one to go on my T38IE, havent tried it out yet though. Ive been using an old Tohatsu 16hp on it which is quite nippy so it should fly with the 25 Yammy !

Honwave arrives tomorrow - secured a 8hp 2 stroke for nothing on a permanent loan - (o it's not stolen) a gift from a friendly uncle to use as long as I want - equipment to get my hands on ... an appropriate anchor (Grapnel in sand is probably the wrong investment) a single flare - fire blanket + extinguisher, bucket for anchor, bilge pump, launch wheels ... jesus etc + etc - this is a rich man's game which I'm not but I'll get there over time........................ bottom line is I can't wait and I probably won't be able to take the 'Enterprise NX01' with an engine capable of warp 8 out until the weekend for 'sea trials' lol - of course if money wasn't an issue - I'd go for all the recommended bangs upon that drum ......... but ...... let's see what's out there -------------- engage!

Great news 8hp would be fine and plenty power for a beginner boat, you'll have loadsa fun with that, sorry could'nt advise on best engine choice as i've only ever tryed a 2hp, a 4hp and a 40hp by tiller, but that was on different sibs to yours, to be honest I found the 40hp with tiller a bit hairy in a chop, the steering/helming of the tiller at speed can become very light, even with 8hp a sudden jolt can knock you and your tiller sideways, so always brace yourself well at speed, a sudden unexpected full lock at speed can cause a violent reaction.
You did'nt mention a Life jacket with your safety gear, certainly well worth considering, I've only mentioned these things because you say your new to boating, so just learn how to handle at low speed for starters pulling up alongside things like buoys and progress from there,

49kg for the short shaft autolube

(Not bad cosidering my antique Twatsu 16hp weighs in at 47kg)

'Dang it' in southern talk so to speak - the shipper (although instruction was given) thought that my baby was to be collected instead of shipped. This means that I need to wait another day or two .... it doesn't really matter given the grand scheme of things ... but I was looking forward to it arriving today. How and Ever - I still can't get to use it 'till the weekend considering the time of year and days getting shorter so they I guess I will stretch my extensive charity in heir direction ... PAX be upon them!, lol (although today I felt like swapping that mid letter for a more colorful hand crafted 'O')

Hi Iamdbat,

I have the same boat as you with a Tohatsu 20hp 4 stroke. Made a video of my Cornwall holiday with it. Around 5 mins in I open her up

thought you might be interested to see while you wait!! I think a 25hp 2 stroke would be perfect on the T40, but if you go 4 stoke and want to save a few hundred quid, Tohatsu is worth a look.
