Johnson 15hp

anyone experience of these engines?

Johnson 15Hp - £1095 | Wills Marine Ltd

I've never used one - are they good? How to they compare to Yammie?

Cheers

I've got a Johnson GT, which was sold as a 10hp but uprated to 15hp. I guess that's effectively the same as the one you're looking at.

I also have a Yamaha 15hp. There's not a lot to choose between them but I would pick the GT if I had to make a choice.

I'm not saying a Yamaha or Mariner are better performing but in general they will be easier to sell on and hold their value better. The price is a bit strong for this time of year.

I reckon you'd be lucky to get any 15hp 2-strioke in good condition for much less than a grand. If it was a Yamaha I'd expect it to be about 20% more.

Used a couple of small Johnsons ( including Johns) over the years. They are evinrude in a differant colour.

I never had an issue - simple tech that just never really seemed to pick up the following like Yam & Merc. You'd be doing well to find another 15 2 stroke for that money ( in decent condition) - as JOhn said the 10hp was also derestricted and sold as the GT putting out about 15 hp .

Pretty sure the 10/ GT/15 are all the same block etc - just GT & 15 have the restrictor plate removed - nothing as fancy as differant jets !

6&8 used a differant block.

I'm looking at that Johnson and this Yamaha.

Yamaha Outboard Engine for sale , Yamaha 15hp outboard engine 1998 2 stroke s shaft - Boats And Outboards

Though the Yamaha dealer doesn't fill me with confidence, which sets alarm bells ringing, and it looks punchy money.

Thoughts?

I need to move this one if anyone is interested - its an 8hp fourstroke.

I acquired the identical engine, but with Evinrude badging last year as part of package. To say I was surprised was an understatement, it was quiet, smooth and powerful. I actually prefered it to a 15hp Mariner I have had in the past.It wasnt quite as nice as a Yamaha, but I would definitely buy another one (on purpose this time ! )

While I agree that it will never command the same money as a Yamaha, it sold in less than 24hrs on Ebay for £900 and I could have sold it a dozen times over at that price.

I've got the 1999 version of that engine in the old grey colour.

Mines just undergone a rebuild due to an overheat.

A simple engine and easy to work on.

Weighs about 38 kilos.

I really want the Yammie, but the I initial conversations with the dealer don't inspire me with confidence.

Weights leave the Johnson as couple of kilos heavier than the Yammie, but nothing to write home about.

Time to open another beer and think on it!

Following this discussion is very interesting. The 9.9/15 HP Evinrude or Johnson have been the primary small fishing motors in many parts of the US for many years when 2 strokes were the norm. They are probably much more evident on the rivers here than small Yammies even today.

I ran one for 10 years before someone stole it, replaced it with another, ran that one over 10 years, and sold it when I got the new motor bug. The buyer jumped on the chance to buy the motor for fishing. Mine were used for fishing salt water most of the year and duck hunting in the winter, so they had very high hours of operation over the years. I did a lot of slow trolling, so I kept the carbs running lean to get the slowest possible trolling speeds which is not good for an engine.

It just strikes me as funny to read postings from so many unfamiliar with the engines.

The two stroke 15hp Evinrude/Johnson/OMC motors are great units, they are hard to find here because people don't usually sell them once they have them.

Deal done to part exchange my Yamaha 8hp 4 stroke for the Johnson 15 that Wills Marine had for sale. Picking it up when in Salcombe on the 18th.

Will be launching at Salcombe, pottering up with the 8 and swapping for the 15 at Wills in Kingsbridge.

Pictures to follow.

A variety of prop pitches are available to fit that engine, so you can fine tune the performance to suit your needs.

Picked up the new engine on Friday evening. Perfect power with the Aerotec, very pleased. Got out in Salcombe for some wave jumping. Saturday afternoon. 'Twas pretty lumpy on the bar, the boat was amazing. One up was change pants material, with a second person on board it was awesome on the waves, and landed very softly. Well chuffed. We were out most the rest of the weekend on a 6 metre Destroyer, all black, great fun in the waves too.

The only problem I had was it didn't seem to like low speed, cutout at this point.

I understand that the front portion of the throttle enables you to change the idle speed?

Yes it does, it basically just opens the throttle a little bit as you turn it.

The two 15's we had were real slow speed trollers. The low speed screw could be adjusted to run lean enough to obtain very slow speed and still start with one pull of the starter cord.

The screw on the tiller or side of motor can be adjusted to set the minimum speed as mentioned above. What year model is the motor, as the early ones had the carbs replaced under warrenty to enable slow speeds? Those were 1974 models, so you probably have a newer version.

Our '80 model had the slow speed assembly replaced which made a world of difference also. '90 and newer were great right out of the shipping crate.
