Jargon buster

I have now been a ribnet member for three years and been a sib owner for about four years but had no boating background previous to that . Although I find ribnet to be a fantastic forum and I regularly read lots of threads that aren't related to sibs I still don't understand some of the boating phrases. I must admit that I still don't understand what chine walking, porpoising etc etc means .
So how about a jargon buster thread to help anyone who is new to boating ?

Fair point, I'll start:-

WOT= Wide Open Throttle

The maximum RPM ( Revolutions Per Minute ) that your engine can achieve at full throttle.

Either side of the keel line going up the hull on a fast planning GRP hull, you'll find at some point chine rails. These are moulded protruding rails which run parallel with the keel. When running fast with plenty of up trim or possibly the motor sat a tad low, the boat can rock from one rail to the other, which feels like it's wobbling from side to side. This is known as 'chine walking'. Quite unnerving at high speed.

'Porpoising' is also caused by over trimming. The result is the boat bobbing it's nose in and out in a rhythmic motion. It looks daft and many newbie owners don't know why it's happening, or how to fix it, so end up bobbing about all summer.

WE or wallet emptying. This isn't so much jargon as an effect caused by owning a boat. There is no known solution short of selling a boat.

GURNARD :

A small spiny fish which looks a bit like a relic from a bygone era. It lives by scavenging around the bottom looking for anything that it may find useful. For a fish of its size ...its big mouth can shift surprising amounts of dark oily mud, which it filters through its bladder before ejecting at regular intervals from its gills.

Not a prolific breeder but likes to seek a mate in the spring when the water temperatures rise above 70F . The female of the species will often devour the male after breeding. Often the young fish will hunt down the male ...if it survives the breeding season.. in an effort to feed off its leftovers.

Its grumpy looking features belies an otherwise peaceful nature.. however .. stand on its tail and its sharp spines can adequately defend itself .

The difference between pitchpoling and stuffing is the stern coming right out of the water.

Port- left hand side of the boat as you're looking forward.
Starboard-Right hand side as you're looking forward.

This doesn't change with your orientation, unlike left/right.

That's a bit more of a 'trip', the throttleman made a bit of a mess of it. A bad trip often results in a 'stuff' off race ending proportions.

My new one, having just had 20 buckets of sea water chucked in my face off the starboard bow whilst out in the Aerotec today - whatever the blooming forecast says always err on the side of adding + 10 mph to the wind speed.

Having said that F5 + in the Bombard was great fun and as always I bottled out long before the boat.
