Maiden voyage next week sometime, do you think I've enough fuel for my first outing?

Lol you couldn't use all that fuel on that motor in a weekend if you tried! I suspect you knew this though...

On the offchance you do, you should probably consider finding your other paddle and mounting it on the boat

Ooh well spotted, he might have to offset the engine as well to counter act the torque from a single engine. Would be better with two outboards

That does look very long for that transom, I guess it doubles up as an aux on BV ?

Not yet, but that was the plan! Possibly a winter project. Because I don't want to store it on deck, I'm thinking of a sliding mechanism that will fit to the transom to lift the Aux directly up and out of the water. That way it will be in the running position and should be better supported for all that wave jumping I do.

Na, I have two kids. If I get torque steer, I'll push one of them over the side

I have just spent two weeks in Cornwall and had a honwave sib with a 5hp on the back, I could just get it to plane if I got far enough forward. I am no lightweight however at 8 feet tall I doubt you are either

I reckon that longshaft will mean you can't get it on the plane even with the extra 1HP, care to place a small wager

We'll have to wait and see till after the trip. I can't put anything bigger on the back as the SIB is rated at a maximum of 6hp and 32kg's and that's what I've got sitting on the transom. How big was the Honwave?

I think it was 2.5 it was on loan. It was rated to take upto 8hp.

The Honda is a VERY heavy lump for 5HP so this did not help either.

I'd have been quids in

With the three of us it didn't plane. However when I off loaded the kids and shifted the fuel tank forward, she went up on the plane without too much trouble. I'm yet to try trimming it differently but I'm going to think about the layout aboard first and try to find a more comfortable seating position as laying across the tubes wasn't the most Ideal of positions but beat kneeling down all the time.

How you you guys travel, sitting on tubes, kneeling sitting?

On various small sibs and dories over the year I tend to find that locking the steering friction on "just moveable" and sitting up on the bench seat helps. Obviously this can be dangerous but an extended K/C around the wrist helps. A tiller extension can also be used with great success but can look very Heath Robinson if not OEM.

Assuming that it planes easily enough, sitting on the tube tends to work, with most people tending to sit on the side to which the tiller is closest, although often this means that the gears are on the opposite sides unless there is a different system eg all on the twist. Ensure that you dont sit too far back because the tube can go right underwater which can lead to much hilarity as water comes piling in but most SIBs tend to be self draining so its not a big deal.
