How far to go

Hi All, just put a deposit down on a new QS3.8XS with a Mercury 25MEFI engine. I live on down on the Solent and to start off will spend time exploring the local harbours, Portsmouth/Langstone/Chichester.

As we are not far from the Isle of Wight, is the combination I am getting OK to do the crossing safely assuming the weather is reasonable?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Geoff

I have done it with a 3.4 with a 10hp ok, I'd say you would be safe on a good day but we did get soaked in some of the chop.

I crossed from Swansea to Ilfracombe and back in a Quicksilver 3.10 with a 15hp. It was 26 miles each way!!!

Absolutely no problem. I've done Portsmouth to Cowes a couple of times in a 3.4m Airdeck - it's not especially comfortable, but no great drama. Pick your weather wisely though!

weekend before last I want from one side of poole harbour to the other in my QS 380 with Tohatsu 30 with 4 big guys on board and a 2ft short chop. We got VERY wet when at displacement speed but when on the plane all pretty dry and very happy.

I would be very happy going cowes to portsmouth on mine in the right conditions. Don't go when strong wind is over the tide as it kicks up a short chop that would make it a wet journey.
