My understanding is we are trying to prevent a fore and aft oscillation at top of transom so by putting the engine leg at 30 to say 45 ' and supporting with a transom saver I am doing good to my transom . Also the transom is sitting and being supported by trailer runners.
Most of all a heavy weight can wreck your back . So even if it shortens transom life which I doubt. I know which choice I would make.
P'S keep a safety wire or other for security and losing it in transit.

I've just driven 740 miles this weekend with mine on the trailer with the transom saver through mid wales over some rather unflat roads and windy turns and not a problem at all. I'd have been VERY worried if it was just free to bounce around back there.
