Has anybody else got an Avon s.3.40 Typhoon?

Hi all, first post for me, joined last week. I started pottering about in the local river a few years in a home made conversion of a little fibreglass tender and last year bought my first SIB. Its an Avon Typhoon 3.4m and i use either my honda 10 or johnson 25 stroker! looking at progressing to the sea this summer. once ive got a plotter, vhf and safety gear all fit for purpose.

Darren. Good choice... I really like those "classic" Avon models. Came close to buying one of the similar grey/red Sportsboat models last summer but ended up with an air floor Zodiac for now.

Is yours black with the red trim bits? Varnished or alloy floor? It will be pretty lively with the 25hp on the back!

As Phil says ease in carefully on the sea and take care.

Thanks Philpot and Fenlander!
I've made a bracket for the auxiliary engine today. I've got a silver century seagull a back up. It's the large 'spoon' type 4 bladed prop. It starts first time every time and tucks out the way perfect with its leg out the water and the Johnson has just enough room to go lock to lock. I will get some photos up of my progress as I get chance. Hopefully I will get some helpful comments please!

And Fenlander, mine is the red and black model. It's in very good condition, and with the aluminium floor. The register plate says it's max motor size is 25hp. The Johnson does really fly, I've put hydro foils on it just to bring planing speed down a little bit and it is stable. The 10hp honda is spot on when I'm on my own in it but won't quite get on the plane whilst two up. Possibly looking for a 20hp honda later this year. I think the 25 honda would be too much with being 3 cylinders and half a ton in weight?

I'm probably going to get told off for wrong page, but would I benefit in a year or so experience on cruising the wash to buy an avon sr4 rib to use as well as my sib?

Hi,
Not sure how your SIB is set up but when we had SIBS back in the 70/80s we had across tube steering with remotes and inflatable seats. The seats were good until they burst and then it was a painful experience. Reading your post brought back many happy memories. I have uploaded the image which shows my friends Avon, we had a Avon S400 with Evinrude 25 both similar set ups. after the S400 we got the SR4 and I could not believe the difference and comfort. If yours is tiller steering try and get the remotes it will transform it for you. Once again thanks for this post because of the memories it has brought back. Good luck with your ventures.

Thankyou Seaflyer02.
mine is a tiller control and so far ive only been on the rivers with it. ive been on one of my mates yacht quite a few times across from Wells next sea to fosdyke on the wash and am confident with orientating by map as well as using a plotter, im just a bit anxious on 'downsizing' to an inflatable! Maybe that sounds silly? My typhoon has 4 threaded bolt holes on starboard side of ally deck which i think might be for a console, but i havnt been able to trace one for it yet.
I proper love it out on the boat, cant wait for the summer!!
