Can't agree! I have 9.8hp on my 2.7m and it's fine. You need to be sensible though - it'll do 20mph and is just a little twitchy at that speed

Just because it says 6 on the back does not mean it is 6hp!,,,,, Mercury 6,8,10 and 15 are all the same block, size and weigh. Same goes for other makes. Hoods are all inter changeable.

Depending on the load, a 6hp should get on the plane. Once you're there you're flying

Yep if the load is light and they are properly inflated a 6hp will plane SIBs up to 3.4m quite well. Add a bit of weight or try and mix it in difficult conditions where you need to snap onto the plane and they're not going to manage so well.

Few years back I was a bit surprised when a nearby holiday cottage was using a Zodiac 340 with an 8hp (used by a slim teen on his own) which nipped up on the plane and until 15kts kept with our sporty hulled 3.6m grp boat with a 25hp. But it's always down to weight.... we were 4 up plus dog, loads of fuel and bbq kit etc.

We have a 5hp 2/ yamaha for our tender origionaly on a 2.9m excell inflatable & that used to plane with me and a small child but once the kids got over about 4 stone it wouldn't quite make it
It's amazing how little it takes to get light boats to plane

My 4hp 2s just gets out 2.5m rib on the plane if alone. Any more than 14.5 stone and it won't get up.

Once up, it shifts!Click image for larger version

I had a Mariner 6hp on my 2.8m Zodiac.
It would plane easily with two of us on board, requiring a few seconds to get going, and would do about 14mph.

I changed the engine for a Tohatsu 9.8 and with that on the back the boat goes like a rocket (well, for a little 2.8m SIB anyway) achieving about 20mph two up.
