It's the end of the serial number stamped on the alloy plate on the outside of the transom.

On the transom, on the backside, top-right corner you will find a plate that goes like this:
FR-XDCA1234A212

Per ISO standards, the plate reads like this:
FR = France, country of origin
XDC = Zodiac/Bombard, their letter code
A1234 = proprietary serial code
A212 = A = Month 2 = Production Year 12 = Model Year (So this one is January 2012, 2012... J112 would be October 2011, 2012)

For those who's id plate is missing, if you remove the alloy back plate that the engine thumb screws go on, you will find the same info that would have been on id plate stamped into the transom that office888 talks about.

Thanks for info gents, I never bought it though, couldn't bring myself to shell out that much on a 16 year old sib.

Will see what comes along as I'm in no hurry to get one.

Cheers
