achilles salvage project ????

i had a donation to my projects list this week and another excuse to clear the workshop and get dug in
i have had a "vintage" achilles 12ft sib donated [was going to be used for parts] but for the age of her the material is great the front tubes and keel hold air perfect the transom is solid and all glue and seams are perfect
the bad bit is where the old owner left it rolled up in a barn for the last 8 years and we had to evacuate a family of mice
after sorting the fluffy critters out and pulling there home out of the rear cone through a 3 '' hole we found the main downfall of the boat 1 massive hole in the port side
size wise it is near to 8''x 6'' although i have done alot of sib repairs over the years this will be by far the biggest
so the plan is to get it cleaned up and rescue this great boat from a trip to the tip
other things needed are deck boards and a good polish
cant seam to add picks at the mo [works computer wont let me] but will get them sorted asap
any tips or advice on achilles sibs would be great as i have never had one before or any advice on repair always welcome

I have one use it as a tender great quality and made of Hypalon
I have even used it as a towable toy (doughnut) once when I forgot the bung for the doughnut!!

i believe it to be hypalon as it seams to be a real heavy built sib

in reality it looks alot worse than it is the material is grubby but not sun damaged nor deterioiated and the transon and its fixing points are perfect there is no seals opening and the 2 front chambers and keel are holding fine
just needs a bit of loving care to bring it back to life

ile update when i get on with some progress
or get stuck and need pointing in the right direction

its a bit of a proving point to a friend as he was laughing when i said i would be sorting it out
a bit last the last few projects that makes up my present sib set up
2.7 loadstar air deck - mariner 15 2 stroke - launch trolly and just about everything else total cost £20 and she beats his 5k boat on every trip

here she is she also was found in a shed with a family of mice in her altho no where as bad and i have a smaller fuel tank in

the engine i got out of a skip about 8 years ago the carb was knackerd so replaced it with a spare 15 carb os its upgraded from a 9.9 and the most reliable engine i have had

out the misses and kids while clearing the local beach [the kids had the re sailing dingy with them that day

cost wise all i had to buy was 2 spark plugs and a repair kit for the sib
all i have got to do now is build a road trailer

on a serious note, its not technically hypalon is it, i thought they had their own derivative?

im pretty sure its on their website the material used, whether its changed since this old beast or not i cannot say.

Back in the days of Hypalon actually being available they made their own tube fabric using Hypalon. Now that Hypalon has ceased to exist they still use the same approach they just use one of the other ChloroSulphonated Material suppliers instead of Hypalon. So you should be fine treating it as Hypalon.

All the old catalogues are available on their website... always good for a nostalgic look at stylish haircuts!!
