Zinc coated wheels

I've had a basic limited search on here from my iPhone but can't find anything.

I took four trailer wheels to get galvanised yesterday and the powder coating place that I took them to recommended getting them ZINC coated rather than galvanised. Just wondering if anybody has had this done before and if it is a good idea to get them zinc coated or just galvanised? Cheers

I personally think galv is best, The only possible downside of galv-ing wheels could be a bead sealing one if tubeless tires ?.
That said I use zinc paint (galafroid) on most of the small mild steel bits I make, as I do not have access to hot dip galv unless its a sizeable order

I would go galv and fit tubes my self

Tried to get my trailer wheels hot dip galvanised. Went to a big galvanisers who said they could not do it successfully, due to pooling. They said that even if I could get a tyre to seal, the wheels would be so far out of balance...
So I got mine zinc sprayed and powder coated. A year or so and no sign of rust......yet.

cheers all, he did say to me that they are a problem to seal on the rims and balancing is a problem as well. They are going to be dipped in zinc rather than sprayed, any known problems with this?

No experience of that but TBH a hosing with WD40 or similar before the first dunking and every couple of months afterwards makes an ordinary steel wheel pretty rust proof.

I bought two eight spoke galvanised tyreless wheels in America and put one in my suitcase and one in my wife's suitcase.

When I got them home I sprayed them with etch primer and then painted them with many coats of white Smoothrite on the outside and black Hamerite on the inside followed by many many coats of black waxoil. I had them tyred easily with tubeless tyres.

I thought the weakness would be the wheel nuts tightening up on all the paint/primer and galv, but used them loads of times in salt water - no problem at all.

When I sold my rib I put the oem wheels back on the trailer. Now I am looking for a nice little SR4 I will be using them again. Happy days

got a set galved for use on our caravan site. was warned about it being uneven once dipped but when they came back they werent bad at all - the bits that had build up just got a once over with flap wheel in angle grinder. tyres sealed fine no probs. cant really say about balance as i dont use them on the road, but if like me you take time to tidy them up you should be able to get them good enough for a tyre place to do the rest with weights.
