what ratchet straps for 6.8

hey folks,

looking at getting all new straps for the boat and wondering if 50mm/5000kg is enough?

i have some "lorry" straps but they don't fit well due to the ratchet ending up in a very awkward place to actually winch up.

thinking 50mm endless but those big enough?

or any links to decently priced 75mm would be good if those are needed (10,000kg)

it is 5000kg minimum break strain, not 500.

mick, if 5000kg minimum break is enough then they are only about 8 quid each.....how much are stainless and where from?

i need to know if 50mm/5000kg is enough though?

Surely!

I use 800kg straps x3.

Our timber lorries use 4x 5000kg straps for tying down 25t of logs.

My 2p

Get them big and wide - never mind the rating. Cut them to length after.

Spray them with a bit of lithium grease and don't worry about S/S - as long as they're rated.

50mm is about 9 quid for same thing but 5000kg

I use 50mm for the stern and bow tie down (blue?) and I have an orange one (75MM?) that I use as a run-on preventer. I like the big sizes as the friction is spread a bit and as they degrade with sun, age, chemicals and abrasion, they're still giving me the couple of tons I want.

So why would you spend how ever many K on a Rib & engine and quibble over £40 to £60 on three decent straps can't understand some of you chaps penny-wise and pound - foolish
I've got 3 x 50 mm rated 5 tons each £45

not sure what are you on about there?

i've just bought the exactly the same spec straps you use.....50mm and 5000kg x3 and a smaller 25mm 1500kg to stop engine bouncing.

i didn't buy stainless as i don't care for my app, boat is stored inside and for 40 quid all in happy to replace them now and again.

Jeeze Mick - I didn't know you had it in you!

I have four tie downs, they're mild steel I guess, rated same as yours are. I give them a spray of grease each autumn. Reckon they cost me a total of €48 (less than one of yours) so I'm up €177 - not what I call pennies but then I do have a pint or two of tartan blood in me.

No sign of them failing yet (third season) but I will have to replace some over the next year or so as the webbing has frayed from friction on the trailer (my bad but to some extent unavoidable). I'll be saving again then!

BTW, I have a stainless ratchet strap hold my liferaft in place. I noticed yesterday that it is beginning to rust - must clean it and spray it now as I'm too tight to replace it with like....

I replaced some blue ones with orange ones (just because that was in the shop). I noticed they are much more visible and so less likely to be left on when launching - not that I would ever forget you realise ;-) They also make the whole boat/trailer seem more noticeable from behind/side which can't be a bad thing. Something to consider if there is little cost difference.
